CHARLOTTE, N.C. ¬¬– Joyce Freeman and Kearah Jefferys both scored 14 points each as No. 6 seed Elizabeth City State University went on a 17-2 run with over four minutes remaining to upset No. 3 seed Saint Augustine's College 57-46 Wednesday in a CIAA Tournament women's basketball quarterfinal game at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Lady Vikings (19-9 overall) advanced to Friday's semifinals. The Lady Falcons, the Western Division champions, ended their season at 18-10.
The Lady Falcons, trailing most of the game, rallied from an 11-point deficit to open a four-point lead on Allison Sikes' (Jr./Richmond, Va.) jumper with 5:46 left. The Lady Falcons were leading 44-40 on another Sikes jumper with 4:29 remaining when the Lady Vikings took over the game.
“We were not ready from the start,” Lady Falcon head coach Margaret Richards said. “We were playing catch-up all game, and it hurt us.”
Jolisa Williams (So./Charles City, Va.) scored a career-high 12 points and Scharlawn Hubbard (Fr./Akron, Ohio) added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who shot 24 percent on 6-for-25 shooting and committed 10 turnovers in the first half to fall behind by 24-14 at halftime.
Freeman and Jefferys led a balanced attack for the Vikings. Shaquella Johnson added 11 points and Kenyatta Gill had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Vikings, who scored eight points off four turnovers during their key run late in the game.
Both Freeman and Crystal Smith tallied four steals apiece as the Lady Vikings converted 15 steals into 16 points for the game. They also held the rebounding edge 43-36 including 16-8 in offensive rebounds. Their bench also contributed 27 points.
The Lady Falcons shot 44 percent in the second half and limited the Lady Vikings to 37 percent shooting for the game, but could not make up for their first-half woes. “We got outrebounded and outhustled and that is not Lady Falcon basketball,” Richards said.
