ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Allison Sikes (Sr./Richmond, Va.) continued her torrid play of late and it led to a comeback victory for Saint Augustine's College.
Sikes collected 28 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, all team highs, for the Lady Falcons, who rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Elizabeth City State 69-64 Thursday in a battle between CIAA women's basketball contenders at Vaughn Center.
The Lady Falcons (11-5 overall, 5-1 CIAA) bounced back from a disappointing loss to Chowan Monday to steal a road win over the Lady Vikings (11-5, 4-2 CIAA), who led 38-31 at halftime. The score was 58-53 in favor of the Lady Vikings with 6:56 left before the Lady Falcons finished the game on a 16-6 run.
Sikes' three-point play with 2:36 remaining gave the Lady Falcons a 62-60 lead. After the Lady Vikings pulled within a point, Umeka Benson (Fr./Charlotte, N.C.) and Brittany Torain (Jr./Warner Robins, Ga.) combined to make 6-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to take the win.
Crystal McCaffity (Sr./Havelock, N.C.) added 12 points while Benson and Torain both scored eight points for the Lady Falcons, who hit 32-of-40 free throws for 80 percent. Benson scored all her points at the charity stripe, where she was 8-of-10.
Keyatta Gill had 25 points and 7 rebounds and Shatara Jackson scored 18 points and had six steals for the Lady Vikings, who made 11-of-16 free throws for 69 percent and committed 29 turnovers which the Lady Falcons turned into 22 points. The Lady Vikings also got 11 points and 9 rebounds from Shaquella Johnson.
Sikes scored 14 points in the first half for the Lady Falcons, who led 20-15 in the first 12 minutes. The Lady Vikings recovered to lead by seven at halftime behind 12 points each from Gill and Jackson.
The Lady Falcons are back at home Saturday against crosstown rival Shaw at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 2 p.m. The Lady Vikings head north to visit Lincoln (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m.
