RALEIGH, N.C. - Kyria Buford led four double-figure scorers with 22 points to lead Shaw past Saint Augustine's College 92-79 Saturday in a CIAA women's basketball shootout between cross-town rivals inside a packed Emery Gymnasium.
Jackie Sanders added 17 points and Brittney Spencer and Allyssa Lane both scored 10 points for the Lady Bears (12-7, 5-3 CIAA). Led by Buford, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Falcons in bench points 36-23.
Two players posted double-doubles for the Lady Falcons (11-6, 5-2 CIAA). Le'Kiesha White (Sr./Richmond, Va.) had 19 points and a career-high 20 rebounds while Umeka Benson (Fr./Charlotte, N.C.) came off the bench to add 11 points and 12 rebounds. Crystal McCaffity (Sr./Havelock, N.C.) scored a career-high 17 points including 4-of-8 three-point shooting, but the Lady Falcons shot poorly as a team, hitting only 33 percent of their shots. Their misses allowed the Lady Falcons to outrebound the Lady Bears 59-46 including 23-10 on the offensive glass, but the Lady Bears shot 47 percent to stay ahead most of the game.
The duo of Buford (6-foot-1) and Sanders (6-foot-3) used their size advantage to score inside and on the perimeter. Buford was 9-of-16 and Sanders was 8-of-12 from the floor for the Lady Bears, who outscored the Lady Falcons 52-45 in the second half. The 92 points were the most by a Lady Falcon opponent this season.
Buford drilled a three-pointer four minutes into the second half for a 55-41 Lady Bears lead. The basket capped a 15-7 run for the Lady Bears, who led 40-34 at halftime.
The Lady Falcons then went on a 15-6 run the next six minutes. Ebony Spencer (Fr./Chesapeake, Va.) made a layup to close the gap to 61-56, but Buford scored nine consecutive Lady Bear points in a 9-2 run for a 70-58 lead at the eight-minute mark. The Lady Falcons didn't get under double-digits again until late in the game.
Niesha Searles added 12 rebounds for the Lady Bears, who scored 19 points off 18 Lady Falcon turnovers. Spencer scored nine points and Brittany Torrain (Jr./Warner Robins, Ga.) added eight points. Allison Sikes (Sr./Richmond, Va.), named Division II national player of the week by Heritage Sports Radio Network and CIAA player of the week, scored six points but had eight rebounds and led the Lady Falcons with four assists.
The Lady Falcons will take a week off before visiting Winston-Salem State Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Bears travel to Livingstone for a contest at 5:30 p.m.
