WSSU Rallies Late To Nip Lady Falcons 58-56

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior guard-forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) scored 23 points for Saint Augustine's College, but Winston-Salem State made a key steal with seconds remaining to preserve a 58-56 victory over the Lady Falcons Saturday in a CIAA Southern Division women's basketball matchup at C.E. Gaines Center.

Junior guard Brittany Torain (Warner Robins, Ga.) added 11 points, five assists and five steals while senior guard-forward Le'Kiesha White (Richmond, Va.) had eight points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Falcons (11-7 overall, 5-3 CIAA, 0-2 Southern Division), who dropped their second straight game. The defeat was the first for the Lady Falcons in five CIAA road contests.

Taylar Wells scored 18 points, Jordhan Peterson added 12 points and Courtney Medley had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Rams (12-6, 7-2 CIAA, 2-0 Southern Division), who went on a 9-2 run in the last seven minutes to erase a 54-49 Lady Falcon lead. The Lady Rams scored three points in the last 31 seconds to lead 58-56 on a layup by Wells and a free throw by Rene Rector, who collected the steal in the final seconds to give the victory to the Lady Rams, who shot 47 percent and outscored the Lady Falcons 36-16 in the paint.

The Lady Falcons shot 34 percent but made 6-of-17 three-pointers including a combined 6-of-10 shooting from Sikes and Torain. The Lady Falcons nearly pulled off the win by turning 19 turnovers including 12 steals into 19 points and outrebounding the Lady Rams 43-33 including 20-7 on the offensive end.

The Lady Rams went into halftime leading 31-27 after leading the entire first half, but the Lady Falcons regrouped in the second half. Freshman forward Umeka Benson (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a layup to push the Lady Falcons' lead to 51-44 before the Lady Rams mounted a late comeback.

The Lady Falcons return to action Monday at Livingstone. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
