Saint Augustine's College makes its regular-season women's basketball debut this weekend at the West Liberty Tip-Off Tournament in West Liberty, W.Va.
The Lady Falcons meet West Virginia Wesleyan Friday (Nov. 12) at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday (Nov. 13), they square off against West Liberty, the host team, at 4 p.m. Both opponents, members of the WVIAC, are in the same Atlantic Region as the Lady Falcons. A victory in either contest could boost the Lady Falcons chances of a NCAA Regional bid should they have a good season.
The Lady Falcons are coming off an impressive showing in a 74-57 exhibition loss at Division I Clemson last Friday.
“We are anticipating a good weekend,” Second-Year Lady Falcon Head Coach
Rachel Bullard said. “We've had a week to prepare since the Clemson game. The girls are excited and ready to open the season against regional play.”
The Lady Falcons are competing in the West Liberty Tournament for the second straight year. Last year, they defeated both Davis & Elkins (87-56) and nationally-ranked West Liberty (79-74) to jumpstart a season that ended in the CIAA Tournament semifinals. They Lady Falcons finished 19-11 overall last season.
The Lady Falcons, picked fourth in the league's Southern Division standings, return seven players including two-time All-CIAA center
Keyona Bryant (Sr./Springdale, Md.), who had 17 points and 14 rebounds against Clemson. It was her first action back since Jan. 15, 2011, when she suffered a knee injury against Bowie State. The injury forced Bryant to miss the final 16 games last season.
West Virginia Wesleyan returns four starters off last season's 18-10 team. West Liberty returns All-American Tori Hansen from last season's 25-7 team, which qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
