RALEIGH, N.C. – Vonisha Woods scored on a follow shot with six seconds left to give Winston-Salem State a 70-69 CIAA women's basketball victory over Saint Augustine's College Monday at Emery Gymnasium.
Woods' basket gave the Lady Rams (14-7, 9-3 CIAA, 4-1 Southern Division) their second narrow win over the Lady Falcons (12-9, 6-5 CIAA, 1-4 Southern Division) this season. The Lady Rams won the first meeting 58-56 on Jan. 29. The second contest was also close with eight lead changes with no margin bigger than six points.
Jasmine Newkirk led the Lady Rams with 20 points and eight rebounds followed by Woods with 13 points. Senior guard-forward Allison Sikes (Richmond, Va.) scored a game-high 25 points for Saint Augustine's College including a three-pointer for a 69-64 Lady Falcon lead with 3:43 left in the game. The Lady Falcons failed to score again while the Lady Rams reeled off the final six points capped by Woods' bucket for the victory. The Lady Falcons had one last chance but turned the ball over at midcourt.
Senior guard-forward Le'Kiesha White (Richmond, Va.) added 20 points and senior guard Crystal McCaffity (Havelock, N.C.) scored 12 points including 4-of-6 three-pointers for the Lady Falcons. Freshman center Umeka Benson (Charlotte, N.C.) added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds followed by Sikes with eight rebounds and White with seven boards.
The Lady Falcons upheld their title as the CIAA's top rebounding team until the final seconds. They collected four more offensive rebounds (20-16), but the Lady Rams grabbed three offensive rebounds on the game-winning possession.
The Lady Rams had the edge inside as they outscored the Lady Falcons 34-26 in the paint. They also relied heavily on their depth, scoring 23 bench points to eight for the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Falcons are on the road Thursday at Virginia State. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
