FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Michelle Shackleford (Fr./Landover, Md.) drove in the contest's only run as Saint Augustine's College stunned Fayetteville State 1-0 in the first game of a CIAA softball doubleheader Wednesday at L.R. Sanders Field.
The Lady Falcons handed the Lady Broncos their first CIAA Southern Division loss this season. The Lady Broncos regrouped to win the second game 8-0 which snapped the Lady Falcons' three-game winning streak.
The Lady Falcons were outhit 5 to 1 in the first game, but their defense didn't let the Lady Broncos score. JaNia Jones (Fr./Fayetteville, N.C.), playing in her hometown, collected the Lady Falcons' only hit on a center field single in the sixth inning. She later scored what turned out to be the game-winning run on a fielder's choice by Shackleford.
The Lady Broncos threatened in the bottom half of the sixth. They loaded the bases with one out, but third baseman Sanqueesha Henderson (Sr./Warrenton, N.C.) caught a line drive, and shortstop Kathryn Tokarski (Jr./Saskatchewan, Canada) scooped up a grounder and tossed it to Henderson at third base for the force out.
In the seventh inning, the Lady Broncos had two players on base with two outs, but a batter hit a grounder to second baseman Ramadana Simmons (Soph./Atlanta, Ga.) for the final out.
Shackleford was also the winning pitcher. She tossed a five-hitter and had four strikeouts in seven full innings.
The Lady Broncos held the Lady Falcons hitless in the second contest. After splitting the doubleheader, the Lady Falcons are 3-24 overall and 3-5 in the CIAA Southern Division. They are one game out in the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot with Johnson C. Smith. The Lady Broncos are 14-25 overall and 3-1 in Southern Division.
The Lady Falcons host crosstown rival Shaw on April 12 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex with the first game starting at 1 p.m. The doubleheader is designated as Senior Day for the Lady Falcons. Seven seniors will be honored including Brittany Jones (Detroit, Mich.), Angela Wood (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Dominique Brown (Detroit, Mich.), Jerissa Lake (Christiansted, St. Croix, V.I.), Joy Hutchinson (Detroit, Mich.), Roshonda Henderson (Warrenton, N.C.) and Sanqueesha Henderson.
