Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as Saint Augustine's College shot out to a quick lead and then held off Bowie State 72-60 Saturday in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium.
The win was the fourth straight for the Lady Falcons (8-5, 4-0 CIAA). All of the wins during the streak have been against league opponents, and each win has been in double digits.
Junior guard
Jolisa Williams (Charles City, Va.) added 15 points and senior guard Keianna Evans (Fayetteville, N.C.) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who led 14-3 in the first five minutes. The Lady Bulldogs (1-11, 1-4 CIAA) - led by 16 points from Cortney Baynard, 14 points and eight rebounds from Juliette Turner and 12 points and seven rebounds from Kimberly Jones - stayed within striking distance, cutting the Lady Falcon lead to five at one point in the second half but were ultimately done in by 33 percent shooting and 22-for-36 free throw shooting including 5-for-14 attempts from the charity stripe in the second half.
Bryant scored 16 points in the first half for the Lady Falcons to help them set the tone and open a 39-31 lead at halftime. The Lady Falcons shot 52 percent in the first half and 41 percent for the game.
The Lady Bulldogs, behind 11 points from Turner, made a run in the second half, but Evans scored all 12 of her points and collected all her rebounds in the final 20 minutes to help the Lady Falcons hold the Lady Bulldogs at bay.
This was the second consecutive game that the Lady Falcons jumped out to a huge early lead. Against Virginia Union Thursday, the Lady Falcons scored the first 11 points in a 66-50 win.
After a 4-0 mark at home to start the CIAA season, the Lady Falcons venture on the road against Chowan University Monday (Jan. 16) in Murfreesboro, N.C., for their first league away game of the season. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
