Lady Falcons Fall To Shaw

Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College was held to season lows in points and field-goal percentage in a 99-53 defeat to defending CIAA champion Shaw Saturday (Jan. 21) in a CIAA crosstown rivalry between women basketball teams inside raucous Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Lady Falcons (10-7, 5-2 CIAA, 0-1 Southern Division) shot 23 percent for the contest. They fell behind 45-17 at halftime with the 17 points being a season low.

The one bright spot for the Lady Falcons was leading scorer and rebounder Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.), a senior center. Bryant paced the Lady Falcons with 22 points and eight rebounds even though she was 5-for-16 from the floor. The Lady Falcons were playing without their second- and third-leading scorers.

Bryant was the only player in double figures for the Lady Falcons. Meanwhile, Kyria Buford put on a shooting exhibition for the Lady Bears, scoring 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting including 5-for-7 behind the three-point arc. Buford also collected a game-high 17 rebounds.

Buford led six Shaw players in double figures. Sequoyah Griffin added 14 points, both Brittney Spencer and Chrystal Harris scored 13 points, and Aslea Williams had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Ransom dropped 10 points for the Lady Bears (11-5, 7-0 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division), who shot 50 percent for the game including a blistering 59 percent in the second half when they outscored the Lady Falcons 54-36.

This game got away from the Lady Falcons early. The Lady Falcons led briefly 10-9 on a jumper by junior guard Autumn Smith-Faulkner (Charlotte, N.C.), but Buford drilled two 3-pointers to spark a 36-7 run to end the half.

The Lady Falcons will play again next Saturday (Jan. 28) when they host Winston-Salem State inside Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 2 p.m.

The contest will be televised by WAUG-TV on Time Warner Cable (Digital Channel 168). Fans can also follow the game via live stats on www.saintaugfalcons.com
