Lady Falcons Power Past Livingstone In Second Half

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior guard Keianna Evans (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half to give Saint Augustine's College the spark it needed in an 86-76 CIAA women's basketball win over Livingstone College Monday (Jan. 30) at Emery Gymnasium.

Senior guard Brittany Torain (Warner Robins, Ga.) added 12 points, all in the second half, for the Lady Falcons (11-8, 6-3 CIAA, 1-2 Southern Division), who outscored the Lady Blue Bears 55-43 in the second half. The 55 points were the most by the Lady Falcons in the second half this season. Torain also dished out seven assists, which tied a career high, while senior center Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.), the CIAA scoring leader, had 13 points and nine rebounds including six on the offensive end.

Nine players scored six or more points for the Lady Falcons including freshman guard Jasmine Cuffee (Norfolk, Va.), who finished with six points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Junior forward Scharlawn Hubbard (Akron, Ohio) added seven points and seven rebounds, and junior guard Autumn Smith-Faulkner (Charlotte, N.C.) scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Victoria Davis (San Diego, Calif.) had eight points, four rebounds and two steals while junior guard Jolisa Williams (Charles City, Va.) and freshman forward Briana Arrington (Richmond, Va.) both chipped in six points.

The Lady Falcons needed contributions from each player to overcome a sluggish start. The Lady Blue Bears (7-14, 2-7 CIAA, 0-3 Southern Division) led by 10 in the first half before taking a 33-31 lead into halftime.

The Lady Blue Bears started the second half where they left off in the first half, scoring the first six points to stretch the lead to 39-31. The spurt woke up the Lady Falcons, who scored the next 14 points to take a 45-39 lead. By the 9:14 mark of the second half, the Lady Falcons had built a 17-point lead.  The Lady Blue Bears kept the game interesting as they closed within six points late, but the Lady Falcons held them off to end a three-game losing streak.

The Lady Falcons took control of the game with their defense and rebounding. They forced 32 turnovers which led to 37 points and outrebounded the Blue Bears 51-33 including a whopping 31-11 edge on the offensive glass. The Lady Falcons lead the CIAA in rebounding.

Their dominance in those two areas help offset 35.7 percent shooting. The Lady Blue Bears shot 49 percent.

Kendra McKinney and Cierra York both scored 17 points and Montiya Harrison added 12 points for the Lady Blue Bears. Tiffany Evans contributed 11 points.

The Lady Falcons visit Fayetteville State on Saturday (Feb. 4) at 5:30 p.m.
