RALEIGH, N.C. –
Temperance Jacobs (Sr./McDonough, Ga.) and
Regime McCombs (Fr./Greenville, S.C.) both scored 18 points for Saint Augustine's University, but the Lady Falcons' late rally fell short in a 61-57 loss to Mount Olive College on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at Emery Gymnasium in the women's basketball season opener for both teams.
Jacobs added eight steals while
Tahsha Mitchell (Jr./South Holland, Ill.) and
Terri Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) both pulled down eight rebounds apiece. Alexandria Silva paced the Trojans with 17 points and Tamara Nesmith added a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Mount Olive. Kirksten Mitchell and Jasmine McDonald had 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Falcons started four newcomers including three freshmen. They held their own against a veteran Trojan squad returning four starters. The score was tied 23-23 at halftime, and the Trojans led by a small margin much of the second half.
Two free throws by McDonald gave the Trojans a little breathing room at 58-46 with 2:52 left, but the Lady Falcons made the game interesting at the end. McCombs swished her fourth three-pointer of the night to close the Lady Falcons' deficit to 60-57 with eight seconds left, but Nesmith hit the second of two free throw attempts with 6.7 seconds remaining to ice the game for Mount Olive.
Free throw shooting doomed the Lady Falcons, who made 10 of 30 free throws for 33.3 percent. They also shot 37.5 percent and committed 29 turnovers. Still, the scrappy Lady Falcons forced 31 turnovers and outrebounded their opponent on the offensive boards (15-11) to keep the game close. The Trojans escaped with a win by making 14 of 28 field goal attempts for 50 percent shooting in the second half. For the game, the Trojans shot 42.9 percent and made only 10 of 23 free throws.
The Lady Falcons are back in action next weekend at the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic in Shippensburg, Pa. They face West Liberty on Friday, Nov. 16, and Davis & Elkins, Saturday, Nov. 17. Both games start at 1 p.m.
