Balanced Scoring Lifts Lady Falcons To 81-70 Win Over Claflin

Boxscore

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The depth of Saint Augustine's University was too much for Claflin University in an 81-70 women's basketball victory at Tullis Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2012.

Guard Regime McCombs (Fr./Greenville, S.C.) scored 15 points and forward Terri Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Falcons (4-3 overall), who won their third game in a row.

McCombs and Jacobs led five Lady Falcons in double figures. Guard Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, Va.) finished with 11 points and six steals while guards Morgan Mitchell (So./Atlanta, Ga.) and Jasmine Cuffee (So./Norfolk, Va.) each added 10 points. Mitchell also had six rebounds and six assists. Walton was the only double-figure scorer who started as the Lady Falcons outscored Claflin 49-27 in bench points.

“We played hard and together,” St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. “I am real happy about that. We were passing the ball to each other well.”

Autumn Smith-Faulkner (Sr./Charlotte, N.C.) scored nine points and Lakiya Rouse (Fr./Greensboro, N.C.) added eight points while Temperance Jacobs (Sr./McDonough, Ga.) pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who shot 44 percent overall and made 25 of 32 free throw attempts for 78 percent. They shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half to open a 37-28 halftime lead. McCombs nailed two three-pointers during a 16-6 run including a trey with six seconds left in the first half for the nine-point lead.

“Regime hit two huge three-point shots,” Bullard said. “[Claflin] was leaving shooters open but we weren't hitting earlier. She came off the bench and gave us a spark.”

Terri Jacobs paced the Lady Falcons in the second half with 12 points and nine rebounds. McCombs added nine points and Walton scored seven points for the Lady Falcons, who never trailed after halftime. Their lead grew to 16 points at one point.

“We had a constant rotation off the bench,” Bullard said. “They couldn't key on one person to stop.”

Bullard had high praise for Terri Jacobs. The double-double in points and rebounds was the first for Jacobs in her seven-game college career.

“She is a go-getter,” Bullard said of Jacobs. “She goes hard every minute.”

Brittani Goodwin and Laquanda Williams both scored 12 points for Claflin (1-8). The Lady Falcons held Claflin to 30 percent shooting.

The Lady Falcons play their second game in two days on Saturday, Dec. 8. They visit Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. at 7 p.m.
