JCSU Holds Off Lady Falcons in OT 81-78

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior center Keyona Bryant (Springdale, Md.) scored 22 points and hauled in nine rebounds for Saint Augustine's College, which took Johnson C. Smith University into overtime before losing 81-78 Monday (Feb. 20) in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium.

LaQwesha Gamble led JCSU with 23 points including five straight points in overtime which gave the Lady Golden Bulls a 79-74 lead with a minute left in the extra session. Gamble was one of four double-figure scorers for the Lady Golden Bulls (19-5 overall, 13-2 CIAA, 7-2 Southern Division), who was 8-for-14 from three-point land for 57.1 percent. Shavonda Price and Terran Quattlebaum both added 14 points and LaKendra Wilkerson scored 10 points.

Senior guard Brittany Torain (Warner Robins, Ga.) added 13 points for the Lady Falcons (13-12, 8-7 CIAA, 3-6 Southern Division), who held a huge 54-36 rebounding advantage. The Lady Falcons outrebounded the Lady Golden Bulls 25-9 on the offensive glass.

Their dominance on the backboards helped the Lady Falcons open a 40-31 second half lead, but the Lady Golden Bulls tied the game at 61 with 3:59 left in regulation. There were five lead changes before a free throw by sophomore forward Umeka Benson (Charlotte, N.C.) of the Lady
Falcons with 1:15 left sent the game into overtime.

The Lady Falcons conclude the regular season at home against crosstown rival Shaw Thursday (Feb. 23) at 5:30 p.m. It will be Senior Night for the Lady Falcons.
