Game 1
Game 2
RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to Virginia State University in the opening day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Walnut Creek Complex. The disappointing defeat carried over into the Lady Falcons' next game that night, a 13-0 loss to Chowan University.
Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) led the Lady Falcons with three RBI on 2-for-3 hitting and Renitta White (Fr./Leland, N.C.) added two RBI on 2-for-4 hitting against Virginia State. Both White and Tokarski smacked back-to-back two-run homers over the centerfield fence in the third inning for a 4-2 Lady Falcons' lead. White leads the Lady Falcons with six home runs.
Tokarski added an RBI sacrifice fly which scored White in a three-run fifth inning to extend the Lady Falcons' lead to 7-2.
Ramadana Simmons (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.) scored on a error and
Taylor Walters (Fr./Douglasville, Ga.) hit an RBI double in the inning.
The Lady Falcons appear headed to victory, but the Lady Trojans scored five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game.
Brittany Jones (Sr./Detroit, Mich.) put the Lady Falcons ahead in the bottom half of the inning when she hit a single and later scored by taking advantage of the centerfielder holding the ball too long.
The Lady Trojans responded by scoring two runs in the seventh to retake the lead at 9-8. Tokarski opened the bottom half with a single, but was caught attempting to steal second base. Two batters later, Walters singled with two outs, but the Lady Falcons struck out to end the game.
The Lady Falcons played Chowan 30 minutes later still dejected from the defeat to the Lady Trojans. Still, the Lady Falcons only trailed 3-0 until the Hawks scored 10 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to put the 10-run rule in effect. The Lady Falcons prevented a no-hitter, however, when Walters and
Cierra Neal (Fr./New Hill, N.C.) collected back-to-back hits in the fifth inning.
The Round-Up started one hour and 30 minutes later than scheduled due to wet field conditions in the morning. The last set of games ended well past 10 p.m.
The Lady Falcons (4-13 overall, 0-2 CIAA) continue play in the Round-Up on Saturday. They face Elizabeth City State University at 11:30 a.m. and Virginia Union at 3:30 p.m. The event concludes Sunday.
