CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College swept Johnson C. Smith University 10-2 and 8-4 on Thursday, March 15, 2012 in a CIAA Southern Division doubleheader at Biddleville Park.
The sweep extended the Lady Falcons' win streak to three games. The Lady Falcons (9-14 overall, 5-3 CIAA, 2-0 Southern Division) have caught fire of late, winning five of their last six games. They combined for 26 hits in the victories.
The Lady Falcons came from behind to win both games. In the first game, the Lady Falcons scored nine runs in the last two innings to erase a 2-1 deficit. In the second game, the Lady Falcons trailed 4-3 but scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead for good.
Cierra Neal (Fr./New Hill, N.C.) of the Lady Falcons had three RBI on 2-for-4 hitting in the first game. Jennifer Plair (Soph./Hampton, Va.) had two RBI on 2-for-4 hitting and
Michelle Shackelford (Soph./Landover, Md.) had two RBI on 3-for-4 hitting.
The Lady Falcons scored the first run in the first inning on Plair's RBI double. The Lady Golden Bulls (8-17, 2-6 CIAA, 0-2 Southern Division) tied the game in the third inning and scored one run in the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Falcons responded by scoring six runs in the fifth inning. Plair started the scoring by hitting a one-run double. Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada), the team's leading hitter, added an RBI sacrifice fly before Shackelford belted a two-run homer.
Taylor Walters (Fr./Douglasville, Ga.) singled in a run and
LaKeisha Ford (Soph./Madison Heights, Va.) finished the rally with a one-run single. The Lady Falcons scored three more runs in the sixth inning on Neal's three-run single.
Shackelford limited the Lady Golden Bulls to five hits in six innings for the win. She struck out seven batters.
Walters led the Lady Falcons with three RBI on 3-for-4 hitting in the second game. Shackelford added two RBI on 2-for-4 hitting and
Ramadana Simmons (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.) had two RBI on 1-for-4 hitting.
The Lady Golden Bulls scored one run in the first inning, but the Lady Falcons scored two runs in the top of the second inning for a 2-1 lead. Shackelford hit an RBI double and Walters connected on an RBI single in the inning.
The Lady Golden Bulls regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Falcons tied the game in the fourth inning on Taylor's RBI double. The Lady Golden Bulls scored in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-3 lead before the Lady Falcons exploded in the fifth. Plair scored on an error and Tokarski hit an RBI single for a 5-4 Lady Falcons' lead. Shackelford singled in a run and Walters hit an RBI triple to stretch the margin to 7-4. Simmons hit an RBI double in the sixth inning for the final run.
Plair gained the pitching win after four and one-third innings of work. Shackelford was credited with the save after holding the Lady Golden Bulls scoreless for two and two-third innings.
