Game 2
SALISBURY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College is riding a five-game softball win streak after sweeping Livingstone College 7-3 in the first game and 12-0 in the second game on Monday, March 19, 2012.
The Lady Falcons are 11-14 overall including a 7-3 CIAA mark. The 11 wins are the most for the Lady Falcons in one season since 2007 when they finished with 10 victories. Under CIAA coach of the week Nikki Bynum, the Lady Falcons are off to a 4-0 start in the Southern Division which puts them in first place.
The hitting of freshman standout Renitta White (Leland, N.C.) and the pitching of CIAA player of the week
Michelle Shackelford (Soph./Landover, Md.) keyed the Lady Falcons against the Lady Blue Bears, who fell to 6-8 overall, 2-6 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the Southern Division. White went 5-for-7 combined with five RBI and two home runs. She leads the conference with nine home runs and is among the league leaders with a .442 batting average.
Shackelford was the winning pitcher in both games. She scattered six hits and recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings of the first game and tossed a two-hit shutout in five innings of the second contest.
In the first game, the Lady Blue Bears scored one run in the first inning to lead 1-0, but the Lady Falcons tied the contest in the third after White singled to left field and scored on an error. The Lady Falcons erupted for six runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead. White started the rally with a three-run homer and Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) later added a two-run homer.
Brittany Jones (Sr./Detroit, Mich.) drove in another run with a single.
The Lady Blue Bears scored two runs in the sixth, and they threatened to rally in the seventh with two runners on base and one out in the seventh. Shackelford slammed the door on a comeback by forcing a pop out and a fly out to end the contest.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. CIAA pitcher of the week Jennifer Plair (Soph./Hampton, Va.) opened the scoring on a wild pitch, and White later scored from third base after
LaKeisha Ford (Soph./Madison Heights, Va.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Taylor Walters (Fr./Douglasville, Ga.) hit a two-run single to close the scoring in the inning.
The Lady Falcons added a run in the third inning for a 5-0 lead when Shackelford scored on an error. They continued to pour it on the Lady Blue Bears, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning. White started the fourth with a solo home run to center field, and Tokarski scored on an error. Both Ford and Walters scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. In the fifth inning, White and
Ramadana Simmons (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.) both hit RBI singles and Simmons later scored a passed ball. The game ended in five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The Lady Falcons are back home Wednesday in a big CIAA Southern Division doubleheader against Fayetteville State University at Buffaloe Road Park. The first game starts at 1 p.m. with the second contest beginning approximately at 3 p.m.
