PETERSBURG, Va. – Saint Augustine's College lost 12-1 to Bowie State University and 5-4 to Virginia Union University on Thursday, April 19, 2012, on the first day of the CIAA Softball Tournament held at Petersburg Sports Complex. The Lady Falcons end their season with 12 wins, the most for the program in five years. It was their first tournament appearance in three years.
All-CIAA second baseman
Ramadana Simmons (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.) led the Lady Falcons on offense. She was 3-for-5 in two games with an RBI and scored two runs scored.
Cierra Neal (Fr./New Hill, N.C.) was 3-for-6 with an RBI and one run scored, and Jolanda White (Fr./Leland, N.C.) was 3-for-6 with one run scored.
Simmons was 2-for-2 against Bowie State and scored the Lady Falcons' only run in the fifth inning on Neal's triple. Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) hit a double against the Lady Bulldogs.
The loss to Bowie State sent the Lady Falcons to the elimination bracket where they faced Virginia Union. The Lady Falcons trailed 5-2 late, but Neal scored on an error and Simmons smacked a one-run single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to narrow the deficit to one run. With runners on first base and second base and two outs in the seventh inning, the Lady Falcons were one hit away from either tying or winning the game, but a fly out gave the Lady Panthers the win.
The trio of White, Neal and
Michelle Shackelford (Soph./Bowie, Md.) each had two hits for the Lady Falcons against the Lady Panthers while Simmons, Shackelford and Jennifer Plair (Soph./Hampton, Va.) each knocked in a run. The foursome of Simmons, White, Neal and
Brittany Jones (Sr./Detroit, Mich.) each scored a run. White doubled against the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Falcons, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Southern Division, finished 12-23 overall. It was the final collegiate games in the careers of seniors Jones and Tokarski.
