RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College split a CIAA doubleheader against crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Lady Falcons lost the first game 9-7 but regrouped for a 10-9 victory in the second game.
Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) led the Lady Falcons on offense with four RBI on 5-for-6 hitting.
Michelle Shackelford (Soph./Bowie, Md.) and
Ramadana Simmons (Jr./Atlanta, Ga.) added three RBI while Jolanda White (Fr./Leland, N.C.),
Domnique Penny (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) and
Taylor Walters (Fr./Douglasville, Ga.) each had two RBI.
The Lady Falcons fell behind in the first inning of both games. The slow start cost them in the first game, but they came back and led much of the second game.
The Lady Bears led 4-0 after one inning in the second game before the Lady Falcons came alive.
LaKeisha Ford (Fr./Madison Heights, Va.) knocked in one run on a double and Shackelford added an RBI groundout in the second inning. The Lady Falcons took the lead 5-4 in the third inning on White's RBI groundout, Tokarski's one-run single and Shackelford's one-run double.
The Lady Falcons (12-17, 5-3 CIAA) added another run in the fourth inning on White's RBI double. The Lady Bears tied the game 6-6 with two runs in the fifth inning, but the Lady Falcons responded with two more runs in the same inning on RBI singles by Tokarski and Walters for an 8-6 lead. The lead stretched to 10-6 in the sixth inning on Penny's two-run single.
The Lady Bears (10-27, 2-4 CIAA) made things interesting in the seventh inning. They scored three runs to close their deficit to 10-9. The tying run was on third base with no outs but the Lady Falcons recorded three straight outs for the win. Shackelford was the winning pitcher for the Lady Falcons.
In the first game, the Lady Falcons never led after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning. They scored their first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Walters, but the Lady Bears countered with a run in the third inning. An RBI on a fielder's choice by Simmons sliced the deficit to one again, but the Lady Bears scored three runs in the fourth inning for a 7-2 lead.
The Lady Falcons bounced right back with three runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Simmons and Shackelford and a one-run double by Tokarski. The Lady Bears scored twice in the seventh inning for a 9-5 lead and the Lady Falcons ended the scoring with two runs in the same inning on a single by Simmons and a sacrifice fly by Tokarski.
The Lady Falcons play again Tuesday against hometown opponent Peace University in a non-conference doubleheader. The times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Peace's campus.
