Lady Falcons Fall 60-51 To Virginia Union

RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, Md.) scored 12 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 60-51 CIAA women's basketball loss to Virginia Union University at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.

The Lady Falcons' record is 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA. The Lady Panthers improved to 6-8 and 3-3 in the CIAA.

Wilson was the only double figure scorer for the Lady Falcons, who shot 31 percent from the floor. Freshman guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, Va.) added nine points, six rebounds and two steals for the Lady Falcons, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Freshman forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, Ga.) finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Panthers had four players score in double figures. Melyce Brown and Ashle Freeman both led the Lady Panthers with 16 points each. Carla Cowherd had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Parress Davis chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Panthers scored off turnovers and offensive rebounds to hold off the Lady Falcons. They converted 26 Lady Falcon turnovers into 28 points and scored 19 points off 19 offensive rebounds. The Lady Falcons only scored 12 points off 24 Lady Panther turnovers.

The Lady Falcons led 5-2 early, but the game quickly turned in the Lady Panthers' favor. The Lady Falcons never led after the first five minutes.

“We just got outplayed,” St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. “We came out flat. [Virginia Union] gained confidence and we couldn't get it back. We will go back to the drawing board and regroup for Saturday.”

The Lady Falcons, down 27-21 at halftime, stayed in the hunt in the second half. Junior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, Va.) scored on a jumper to keep the Lady Falcons within 40-38 at the nine-minute mark. Senior forward Temperance Jacobs (McDonough, Ga.) later hit two free throws to keep the Lady Falcons within 43-40 with a little over six minutes left, but they would get no closer.

The Lady Panthers led at halftime on the strength of their pressure defense. The Lady Falcons committed 14 first-half turnovers which the Lady Panthers turned into 17 points. The Lady Panthers also scored nine points off nine offensive rebounds.

Wilson scored eight points on 3 of 4 shooting to keep the Falcons close in the first half. Terri Jacobs added four points and Lakiya Rouse (Fr./Greensboro, N.C.) added three points, three assists and two steals for the Lady Falcons in the half.

Freeman led the Lady Panthers with nine points and three steals in the first half. Cowherd added six points and six rebounds and Brown scored five points.
