St. Aug Women Stop Claflin In Home Basketball Opener

Box Score RALEIGH, NC - Sophomore forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Saint Augustine's University to an 83-76 women's college basketball win over Claflin University at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.

Sophomore guards Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) and Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who won for the first time in three games. The Lady Falcons shot 48 percent from the floor and made 27 of 40 free throws in their home opener compared to 17 of 34 free throws for Claflin.

The Lady Falcons built a 15-point halftime lead, then held off Claflin in the second half. The Lady Panthers (1-1 overall) rallied within three points on two occasions but the Lady Falcons never wilted.

"I am happy we were able to hang on to the lead and win the game," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "Claflin is a scrappy team who never gave up. I thought there were several players who showed up in big ways for our team. Hopefully, we can build on this and continue to work to get better."

Both senior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) and redshirt junior guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) had eight points each and senior power forward Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA) chipped in seven points. For the Lady Panthers, Karahn Scott scored 20 points off the bench to pace four double-figure scorers.

The score was 19-16 in favor of the Lady Falcons when they went on a 29-17 run to end the first half. The margin stayed in double digits early in the second half before Claflin sliced the deficit to 63-60 with 7:23 left.

Jacobs hit two free throws and McCombs swished one of her four three-pointers to stretch the lead to eight points. The Lady Panthers closed within three again at 74-71 with under two minutes remaining, but Spencer made four straight free throws and Wilson scored a layup off her steal for a nine-point lead.

The Lady Falcons led by five with 39 seconds left but two free throws by Wilson and one free throw by Spencer prevented any comeback.

Both Jacobs and McCombs were five of 10 from the floor with McCombs knocking down four of five three-point attempts for the Lady Falcons, who were 6 of 11 from three-point land. Jacobs was a perfect six of six from the free throw line and Spencer was eight of 10. Walton scored on five of 9 field goal attempts and four of seven free throw attempts.

The Lady Falcons are back on the road Saturday, November 23 against the University of South Carolina-Aiken in Aiken, S.C., for a 3 p.m. contest. It will be the first of six straight away games for the Lady Falcons.
