Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) scored 14 points to lead three double figure scorers for Saint Augustine's University in an 80-69 women's college basketball loss to Barton College at Wilson Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 26, 2013.
Sophomore guard
Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) added 12 points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added 10 points and three steals for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Falcons dominated the paint, outscoring Barton 40-24 inside and 22-13 in second chance points off 23 offensive rebounds. But the Lady Falcons shot 33 percent overall compared to 47 percent for the Lady Bulldogs.
The advantage could have been greater inside the lane, according to St. Aug Head Coach
Rachel Bullard.
"Second chance opportunities hurt us because we didn't capitalize on them like we should have," Bullard said.
The Lady Falcons (2-3 overall) fell behind 6-0 early and never led in the game. The Barton lead reached 10 points but the Lady Falcons rallied late in the first half. Rouse scored on a layup to trim the deficit to 34-30 with 2:04 left in the half. The Lady Bulldogs (3-4 overall) ended the half with seven consecutive points for a 41-30 halftime lead.
The Lady Falcons found themselves down by 16 in the second half, and the deficit stayed in double digits most of the half. They did get within nine points several times and even pulled within seven with 34 seconds left on a Rouse follow shot. But Barton's Nyeshea Willie, who scored 23 of her game-high 28 points in the second half, canned two free throws with 19 seconds left and Brianna Hinton finished the scoring with two free throws for the 80-69 final score.
Freshman center
Shakeisha Washington (Atlanta, GA) added eight points and sophomore guard
Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) had four steals for the Lady Falcons, who finished with 11 steals as a team and forced 23 turnovers. Junior forward Umeka Benson (Charlotte, NC) grabbed six rebounds.
Willie added eight rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Lady Bulldogs. Brianna Thomas added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Tiffany Webster scored 13 points. Cassandra Brown, who played for the Lady Falcons during the 2009-10 season, had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs, who made 8 of 16 three point attempts.
"Our rotation on defense killed us," Bullard said.
The Lady Falcons are back on the road Saturday, November 30 when they visit Mount Olive College at 4 p.m. It will be the third of six consecutive away games.
"We have to bounce back quickly because we have another tough one on the road," Bullard said.
