Late Surge Pushes Lady Falcons Past Elizabeth City State 58-47

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the second half including two huge three-pointers as Saint Augustine's University pulled away late from Elizabeth City State University in a 58-47 non-conference women's basketball win between two CIAA teams at the Vaughn Center on Thursday, December 5, 2013.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Lady Falcons (3-4 overall) and gave them momentum as they near the conference portion of their schedule in January 2014. Though it was a non-conference game, the intensity had the feel of a CIAA battle.

"This win definitely gives us some confidence going into conference play," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "We are happy with the effort given tonight. Several players stepped up in a huge way. I'm very proud of our young ladies."

McCombs made five three-pointers overall. Sophomore forward Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA) added nine points off the bench and sophomore guard Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) had eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Falcons in a balanced effort. Their depth led to a 19-11 edge in bench points.

Junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) finished with seven points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added six points, five assists and four steals. Senior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) contributed five points and five rebounds off the bench.

"The key to tonight's game was getting off to a great start, attacking on the offensive end and rebounding on the defensive end," Bullard said. "We wanted to get easy baskets and get to the free throw line."

The Lady Falcons trailed 23-21 at halftime, but outscored the Lady Vikings 37-24 in the second half. Their pressure defense and constant subbing wore down the Lady Vikings and prevented them from regaining the lead late after the Lady Falcons opened an 11-point lead early in the second half on an 11-2 run. The Lady Falcons scored eight straight points during the run on a three-pointer and layup by Rouse and a three-point play by Davis.

The Lady Vikings closed within 47-45 but McCombs keyed a late 11-2 Lady Falcons run in the final 6:24 for the win. She swished back-to-back three pointers to put the Lady Vikings away. Bothered by the quicker and deeper Lady Falcons, the Lady Vikings failed to make a field goal during that stretch. The Lady Vikings missed seven shots including six three-pointers while turning the ball over three times. Their only points came on two free throws with 47 seconds left.

"We started out fouling in the second half which allowed them to score when the clock wasn't running," Bullard said. "Once we gathered ourselves, we were able to get some stops and hit some shots to take a larger lead. We managed the clock well late in the game by running our sets and being patient. Our point guard, Porscha Walton, did an excellent job managing the floor. Everyone was on the same page. Regime hit a huge three-point shot off a play drawn in the huddle. We executed down the stretch which made this an excellent win for us."

Overall, the Lady Falcons limited the Lady Vikings to 28 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers while getting 12 steals. The field-goal percentage and the three-point field goal percentage (2 of 16 for 13 percent) of the Lady Vikings are the lowest for a Lady Falcons' opponent this season.

No Lady Vikings player scored in double figures. For the Lady Vikings, Derrica Henry and DaShera Boone each scored nine points. Jasmine Boyd and Chelsey Davis both scored eight points and Ya'Shonti Bridgers had 10 rebounds.

The stifling defense of the Lady Falcons made up for 35 percent shooting and 48 percent shooting from the free throw line (10 of 21). The Lady Vikings were 15 of 25 from the free throw line for 60 percent.

The Lady Falcons scored the first five points and led by five early in the first half. Their defensive pressure bothered the Lady Vikings, but cold shooting and turnovers allowed the Lady Vikings to surge ahead by five points late in the half. A three-pointer by McCombs with seconds remaining pulled the Lady Falcons within 23-21 at halftime.

McCombs scored seven points, including two three-pointers, in the first half. Allen added five points and five rebounds and Davis scored four points off the bench.

The Lady Falcons take a break before playing in the West Virginia State Tournament on December 20 and December 21. Their first opponent is Ursuline College on December 20 at 7:30 p.m.
