RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University showcased superb pitching and clutch hitting in its season-opening softball doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013.
The Lady Falcons combined for 12 hits and limited the Pacers to two runs in two games to come away with a victory and a tie at Wachovia Field on Peace's campus. The first game was a 5-1 win for the Lady Falcons while the second contest ended in a 1-1 tie due to darkness.
Hannah Stutts (So./Statesville, N.C.) and Alyssa Morales (Fr./Schwenksville, Pa.) of the Lady Falcons were impressive in their pitching debuts. Stutts, who won Game 1, scattered five hits in seven innings in holding the Pacers to one run. Morales, the Game 2 winner, threw a five-hitter in six innings as she held the Pacers to one run as well.
The pitchers were backed by good defense and timely hits. In the first game,
LaKeisha Ford (Jr./Madison Heights, Va.) drilled a two-run shot over the fence in right-centerfield to break a 1-1 tie and give the Lady Falcons a 3-1 lead in the second inning, a lead they never relinquished. She scored herself and
Michelle Shackelford (Jr./Bowie, Md.) on the home run.
The Lady Falcons (1-0-1) added a run when Jolanda White (So./Leland, N.C.) singled to centerfield in the third inning to score sister Deja White (Fr./Leland, N.C.). The Lady Falcons tacked on another run in the fourth when Ford stole home after reaching base on a walk.
Ford led the Lady Falcons in batting the first game. She was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in addition to scoring two runs scored. Jolanda White was 1-for-3 with one RBI and Deja White was 2-for-4 with two runs scored including a run in the first inning on a wild pitch.
Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) was 2-for-3 and
Ramadana Simmons (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) was 1-for-3.
Ford scored the only run for the Lady Falcons in the second game on a wild pitch in the third inning. The Pacers (0-1-1) tied the score 1-1 in the fourth inning but did not score again despite leaving seven players on base for the game.
For the Lady Falcons,
Taylor Walters (So./Douglasville, Ga.) was 2-for-3, and Stutts and Neal were both 1-for-3.
Jennifer Plair (Jr./Hampton, Va.) was 1-for-2. The Lady Falcons had two chances to blow the game open but left the base loaded in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Lady Falcons host their first home doubleheader of the season on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. Davis & Elkins College comes to Raleigh, N.C., to play the Lady Falcons at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
