Lady Falcons Gain First CIAA Softball Victory

Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – LaKeisha Ford (Jr./Madison Heights, Va.) totaled three RBIs, and Hannah Stutts (So./Statesville, N.C.) and Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) each added two RBIs as Saint Augustine's University beat Elizabeth City State University 11-3 for its first CIAA softball victory of the season on Sunday, March 10, 2013. The contest was played at Hawks Field on the campus of Chowan University as part of the CIAA Round-Up 1.

The trio of Ford, Stutts and Neal also led the Lady Falcons (5-3-1, 1-2 CIAA) in hits with two apiece. Daja White (Fr./Leland, N.C.) scored a game-high three runs while Ford and Taylor Walters (So./Douglasville, Ga.) each added two runs.

Alyssa Morales (Fr./Schwenksville, Pa.) earned the win despite pitching two innings. Morales and relievers Stutts, Jennifer Plair (Jr./Hampton, Va.) and Michelle Shackelford (Jr./Bowie, Md.) combined to hold the Lady Vikings to five hits. Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons collected 10 hits. The Lady Falcons had one error and the Lady Vikings had three errors.

"We were the aggressor today on offense," St. Aug Head Coach Nikki Bumpass said. "We stuck to the game plan, and we minimized our errors."

The Lady Falcons put the contest away in the first two innings. They scored four runs in the first and two in the second for a 6-0 lead. The Lady Vikings pulled within 6-2 in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Falcons exploded with four runs in the fourth for a 10-2 lead. The game was stopped after the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

The Lady Falcons take a week off for spring break before returning to action Sunday, March 17, 2013 at home against Belmont Abbey. The first game of the doubleheader begins at noon.
