Stutts' Two HRs Lead Lady Falcons To Softball Sweep Over Shaw

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Hannah Stutts (So./Statesville, N.C.) was the winning pitcher in the first game and hit two home runs in the second game as Saint Augustine's University swept Shaw University 13-9 and 8-6 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Wednesday, March 20, 2013.

The victories lifted the Lady Falcons' record to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA. They are 2-0 in the Southern Division. The Lady Bears are 6-17 overall, 1-5 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the Southern Division.

“I am very proud of the way the girls came out and played,” St. Aug Head Coach Nikki Bumpass said. “We kept our intensity up and hit very well today. Hannah stepped up big. Her home runs gave us momentum in the second game. She pitched the entire first game and closed out for us in the second game.”

Stutts recorded five strikeouts and one walk in seven complete innings for the victory in the first contest. She smacked two towering home runs in the second game to lead the Lady Falcons. The sophomore transfer was 5-for-8 at the plate with four RBIs and four runs scored in two games.

Daja White (Fr./Leland, N.C.) was 6-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who collected 26 hits combined. Taylor Walters (So./Douglasville, Ga.) drove in four runs and had three hits. The trio of Jennifer Plair (Jr./Hampton, Va.), Jo'Landa White (So./Leland, N.C.) and LaKeisha Ford (Jr./Madison Heights, Va.) each added three runs, and Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) collected three hits.

In the first game, the Lady Falcons scored five runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth to lead 11-3 after falling behind 3-0 early. Plair started the rally in the third when she scored on a wild pitch. Ford's RBI single scored Daja White and Michelle Shackelford (Jr./Bowie, Md.) hit an RBI single to score Jo'Landa White. Neal drilled a two-run single to score Walters and Stutts for a 5-3 Lady Falcons' lead.

In the fourth inning, Daja White singled to score Ramadana Simmons (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.). Plair scored on a passed ball and Stutts hit an RBI single to score Daja White. Walters hit a two-RBI single to score Jo'Landa White and Ford, and Stutts scored on a passed ball for an 11-3 lead.

Shaw pulled within 11-6 heading into the seventh inning, but Neal scored on a wild pitch and Jo'Landa White singled in Daja White for a 13-6 lead. The Lady Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Falcons held on for the victory.

In the second game, Stutts ignited the Lady Falcons in the first inning with a two-run homer over the left field fence which also scored Ford. Daja White hit an RBI single to score Plair in the second, and Stutts added a solo homer in the third which sailed well over the left field fence. It put the Lady Falcons ahead 4-0.

The Lady Bears scored two runs in the third, but the Lady Falcons responded with four runs in the fourth. Neal scored on a sacrifice fly by Jo'Landa White and Simmons scored on an error. Walters added a two-run single which scored Jo'Landa White and Ford for an 8-2 lead. Once again, the Lady Falcons held off the Lady Bears in the late innings. The Lady Bears scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the Lady Falcons prevailed with the two-run win. Shackelford pitched six and one-third innings for the victory and Stutts pitched two-thirds of an inning when she entered in the seventh.

The Lady Falcons play a tripleheader in the CIAA Round-Up in Fayetteville, N.C., on Thursday, March 21, 2013. They face Lincoln (Pa.) at 10 a.m., Bowie State at 1 p.m. and Virginia Union at 4 p.m. The site of the Round-Up is Arnette Park.
