Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) smacked a grand slam home run and Hannah Stutts (So./Statesville, N.C.) hit a homer as Saint Augustine's University swept Johnson C. Smith University by identical 10-2 scores in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park on Saturday, March 30, 2013.
The Lady Falcons (14-5-1 overall, 6-0 Southern Division) won their ninth consecutive game and fourth in two days. Coming off a sweep of Livingstone on Friday, the Lady Falcons were tired entering Saturday's matchups against JCSU but found enough strength to pull away from the Lady Golden Bulls (4-21 overall, 0-8 Southern Division).
“It was a tough doubleheader, especially after playing one yesterday,” St. Aug Head Coach Nikki Bynum said. “JCSU played us tight. We managed to take over in the late innings.”
With the victories, the Lady Falcons moved into first place with defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State University in the Southern Division. They have two league games remaining each against Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State, which is two games out of first in third place. The Lady Falcons travel to WSSU on April 7 and Fayetteville State the following day on April 8.
The homers by Neal and Stutts give the Lady Falcons' a league-high 27 on the season. The Lady Falcons rank fourth in Division II in home runs per game and fifth in batting average.
Neal's grand slam to center field was part of a seven-run fifth-inning which turned the second game into a rout for the Lady Falcons after they led 3-2.
LaKeisha Ford (Jr./Madison Heights, Va.) started the rally with an RBI double to score Daja White (Fr./Whiteville, N.C.).
Taylor Walters (So./Douglasville, Ga.) hit an RBI single to score Ford before Neal hit her grand slam which scored Kristen Long (Fr./Durham, N.C.), Walters and
Michelle Shackelford (Jr./Bowie, Md.). Daja White finished the rally with an RBI single which scored
Ramadana Simmons (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.).
The Lady Falcons led 1-0 in the first inning when Daja White scored on a fielding error. The Lady Golden Bulls tied the game 1-1 in the third inning, but the Lady Falcons added two runs in the same inning when Walters' RBI single scored Plair, and Daja White scored on a wild throw. The Lady Golden Bulls moved within 3-2 in the fifth before the Lady Falcons took control in the bottom half of the inning for the win.
Neal was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored in the second game. Walters was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored and Daja White was 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Shackelford was the winning pitcher.
In the first game, the Lady Falcons led 1-0 but the Lady Falcons tied the score in the second inning on Stutts' solo homer to left field. The Lady Golden Bulls regain the lead 2-1 in the third inning, but the Lady Falcons gained the lead for good in the third inning at 3-2. Simmons scored after stealing home and
Jo'Landa White hit an RBI single to score Daja White. They extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth on Simmons RBI bunt single which scored Taylor and Neal's run off a JCSU error.
The Lady Falcons scored five runs in the sixth inning for the win. Daja White scored on a wild throw and Stutts hit an RBI single to score Ford. Walters singled in
Jo'Landa White and Neal hit an RBI double to score Stutts and Walters.
Stutts was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons. Walters was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored and Simmons was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Neal was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Stutts also performed well on the mound, striking out seven batters with no walk. She allowed four hits in six innings.
Simmons was honored between the first and second game on Senior Day. The team's only senior, Simmons went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs in two games. She was also 2-for-2 in steal attempts.
The Lady Falcons travel to Laurinburg, N.C., to play St. Andrews University in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. The first game starts at 2 p.m.
