Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, Va. - Saint Augustine's University reached the second day of the double-elimination CIAA Softball Tournament after defeating Virginia Union University 5-3 and losing to Chowan University 4-3 in eight innings at the Petersburg Sports Complex on Thursday, April 18, 2012. The Lady Falcons (16-11-1 overall) will face Virginia Union again in the elimination bracket on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 10 a.m.
The Lady Falcons, seeded second in the Southern Division, started Thursday with a two-run victory over the Lady Panthers, the No. 3 Northern Division seed. The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the second inning, but the Lady Falcons tied the score at 3-3 in the third inning. Daja White (Fr./Leland, N.C.) hit an RBI double to score
Ramadana Simmons (Sr./Atlanta, Ga.) for the first run and LaKiesha Ford (Jr./Madison Heights, Va.) scored Daja White on an RBI groundout for the second run.
Jo'Landa White (So./Leland, N.C.) scored the third run when Hannah Stutts (So./Statesville, N.C.) reached base on an error.
The Lady Falcons took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Stutts hit a two-run single to score Ford and Daja White. Alyssa Morales, out since March 10 with an ankle injury, held the Lady Panthers (14-9 overall) scoreless and recorded two strikeouts in three and two-thirds inning of relief pitching for the win. Jo'Landa White went 2-for-3 batting with a double apiece.
The Lady Falcons almost stayed in the winner's bracket after taking Northern Division champ Chowan to an extra inning. The Hawks singled in the game-winning run in the eighth to send the Lady Falcons to Thursday's elimination bracket.
The Lady Falcons led 1-0 against the Hawks in the first inning on Stutts' RBI single which scored Daja White. Chowan tied the score 1-1 in the same inning, but the Lady Falcons scored one run in the second and one run in the third for a 3-1 lead.
Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch and
Jo'Landa White hit an RBI single to score sister Daja White. The Hawks tied the game with two runs in the third before winning the contest in the eighth.
Daja White led the Lady Falcons with 2-for-4 hitting including a double.
