Lady Falcons Outlast Virginia Union 77-71

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 21 points including 6 of 12 three-point attempts and sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added 14 points as Saint Augustine's University grinded out a 77-71 CIAA women's basketball win over Virginia Union University at Barco-Stevens Hall on Monday, January 13, 2014.

Senior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) added a season-high 11 points and sophomore forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) was one point away from a double-double with nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Jacobs also added four blocks for the Lady Falcons, including a big block down the stretch which helped preserve the victory. There were 10 ties and 14 lead changes in the contest.

The Lady Falcons (4-1 CIAA, 9-5 overall) have now won seven of their last eight contests. They were 2-1 on a three-game Northern Division road trip which spanned five days.

McCombs scored 13 points, Walton pumped in 12 points and Jacobs had 11 rebounds and four blocks in the second half for the Falcons, who used a 22-9 spurt to erase a 62-55 deficit and defeat the Lady Panthers (1-5 CIAA, 4-10 overall). McCombs scored 10 points during the run.

McCombs started an 11-0 Lady Falcons run with a three-pointer and free throw to cut the deficit to 62-59. Walton added two free throws to pull the Lady Falcons within 62-61.

Spencer scored on a three-point play off a layup to put the Lady Falcons up 64-62. Jacobs added two free throws to stretch the lead to 66-62 with 3:58 left. After a VUU free throw, McCombs buried a three-pointer for a 69-63 lead.

The Lady Panthers scored the next four points including two free throws by Ashle Freeman of VUU to close the Lady Falcons lead to 69-67, but Walton drilled a big jumper to push the margin to four. On VUU's next possession, Jacobs made a huge block on April Robinson and the Lady Falcons gained possession. Spencer made two free throws for a 73-67 lead with 27 seconds left and Walton made four straight free throws to put the finishing touches on the victory.

Junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) added six points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) and senior forward Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA) each added six points and four rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who made 25 of 36 free throws and outscored the Lady Panthers 23-18 in bench points.

Freeman, the CIAA scoring leader, scored 20 points for the Lady Panthers but only two in the second half. Melyse Brown had nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals and ShaHadah Barret finished with nine points and 11 assists for the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Falcons led 35-32 at halftime, but the Lady Panthers opened the second half with a 14-6 run for a 46-41 lead. The Lady Falcons responded with a 10-2 run capped by McCombs' trey for a 51-48 lead. The score was tied 52-52 with 9:29 left when the Lady Panthers used a 10-3 spurt for a 62-55 VUU lead before the Lady Falcons rallied.

McCombs scored the game's first five points, including a three-pointer, to give the Lady Falcons a 5-0 lead. The Lady Falcons led until Freeman of the Lady Panthers tied the game on a three-pointer at 16-16. From that point, the lead changed seven times and the score was tied six times.

Jacobs canned a jumper with 25 seconds left for a 33-31 Lady Falcons lead. Brown of VUU hit a free throw to slice the lead to 33-32, but sophomore guard Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) drilled two free throws with 1.5 seconds left for a 35-32 halftime lead for the Lady Falcons.

McCombs led the Lady Falcons with eight points in the first half. Wilson added six points and Jacobs scored five points as eight Lady Falcons scored in the first half. Freeman paced the Lady Panthers with 18 first-half points.

The Lady Falcons enter Southern Division play starting Saturday, January 18, 2014, against Winston-Salem State University at Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. Game time is 5 p.m. The men's and women's doubleheader is designated as the MLK Classic.
