Lady Falcons Hang Tough Before Falling Late to WSSU

Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) scored a season-high 13 points off the bench and sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists as Saint Augustine's University stayed close until late in a 62-52 CIAA women's basketball loss to Winston-Salem State University in the MLK Classic at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, January 18, 2014.

Sophomore forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) contributed eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists as she gave a yeoman's effort against the taller Winston-Salem State front line. Junior guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) scored seven points off the bench and sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) had six points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

The loss was the second in nine games for the Lady Falcons (0-1 Southern Division, 4-2 CIAA, 9-6 overall), who played their fourth consecutive away game. The Lady Falcons fought valiantly, forcing 22 Lady Rams turnovers which led to 23 points, but they ran out of steam at the end of their CIAA Southern Division opener.

Neither team led by more than two points in the second half until Jacobs buried a corner jumper at the 8:24 mark for a 44-41 Lady Falcons lead, their biggest since early in the contest. The Lady Rams went on a 16-3 run including 12 straight points for a 57-47 lead with 4:05 left in the game. McCombs of the Lady Falcons drilled a three-pointer to slice the deficit to 57-50 with 1:23 left, but that was as close as the Lady Falcons would get.

Amanda Hairston and Jasmine Elum each scored 16 points and Hairston added nine rebounds for the Lady Rams (1-0 Southern, 5-2 CIAA, 11-6 overall), who shot 50 percent for the game including 55 percent in the second half. The Lady Falcons outrebounded the Lady Rams 18-9 on the offensive boards but shot 33 percent from the floor including 28 percent in the second half.

The Lady Falcons spurted out to 5-0 lead, but the Lady Rams reeled off 12 consecutive points to open a seven-point lead. The Lady Rams maintained a working margin for much of the first half, leading 24-16 with 5:27 remaining in the first stanza. The Lady Falcons ended the first half with a flurry, outscoring the Lady Rams 13-5 to pull into a 29-29 halftime tie.

Spencer scored five points during the rally, including a jumper to pull the Lady Falcons within 29-26. After the Lady Falcons forced a turnover, Rouse knotted the score at 29-29 with a three-pointer. It was the third trey by the Lady Falcons during the run.
Walton and Wilson both scored seven points to lead the Lady Falcons in the first half while Spencer added five points. Jacobs had four points, five rebounds and four assists.

Hairston led the Lady Rams with eight points and four rebounds. Jovonah Graham scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds.

The Lady Falcons will visit Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday, January 22 at 5:30 p.m. It will be the fifth of a five-game road stretch.
