Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 13 points to lead three double-figure scorers and Saint Augustine's University overcame a 14-point first half deficit to pull out a 64-57 CIAA women's basketball victory over Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.

Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) added 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, and senior guard
Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) came off the bench to score 10 points for the Lady Falcons, who trailed 31-22 at halftime but outscored the Lady Golden Bulls 42-26 in the second half.
The 14-point first-half deficit was the largest comeback for the Lady Falcons (1-1 Southern Division, 5-2 CIAA, 10-6 overall) this season. This was their first CIAA Southern Division win this season.
"We could have gone in the locker room at halftime and folded," St. Aug Head Coach
Rachel Bullard said. "But we regrouped, got ourselves together and came out with a different mentality [in the second half]. It paid off for us."
Deanna Downer scored 16 points for the Lady Golden Bulls, who led 31-17 late in the first half. But the Lady Falcons turned the pressure up in the second half which enabled them to speed the game and get in transition. As a result, the Lady Falcons chipped away at the deficit until junior guard
Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) made two free throws for a 36-35 lead, the first for the Lady Falcons since the game's opening moments.
The score was tied 40-40 when McCombs drilled a three-pointer to give the Lady Falcons the lead for good. She added a layup to give the Lady Falcons breathing room at 51-46 with 5:52 left. The Lady Falcons led 53-50 when McCombs swished three free throws after being fouled attempting a three-pointer. The free throws pushed the Lady Falcons' lead to six and Jacobs added two free throws for a 58-50 lead with 2:18 left. The Lady Golden Bulls (0-2 Southern Division, 5-3 CIAA, 10-7 overall) never got closer than five as Spencer iced the game by making 4-of-6 free throws.
The Lady Falcons turned up the heat on the Lady Golden Bulls in the second half with their full court pressure. They forced 18 Lady Golden Bulls' turnovers and limited their opponent to 30 percent shooting while making 41 percent of their shots. The Lady Falcons also excelled at the free throw line in the second half, making 15-of-22 from the charity stripe while the Lady Golden Bulls were 12-of-15. The Lady Falcons also held the Lady Golden Bulls to 0-for-3 three-point shooting after they made 3 of 5 in the first half. For the game, the Lady Falcons forced the Lady Golden Bulls to commit 30 turnovers while they went to the free throw line 43 times, hitting 27.
The Lady Falcons seized a 6-0 lead early before the Lady Golden Bulls scored. But the lead evaporated quickly as the Lady Golden Bulls took an 11-8 lead on a three-pointer. Another three-pointer pushed the Lady Golden Bulls' lead to 22-13.
Two free throws stretched the JCSU lead to 31-17 with 3:06 in the first half. The Lady Falcons finished the half with a 5-0 run to get inside 10 points. A layup and two free throws by Spencer combined with a free throw by sophomore guard
Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) sliced the Golden Bulls lead to 31-22 at halftime.
The Lady Falcons shot 19 percent in the first half, making 5-of-26 shots including 0-for-7 behind the three-point arc. They stayed in striking distance by getting to the free-throw line 21 times, making 12.
Rouse ended the first half with six points and four rebounds for the Lady Falcons. Spencer came off the bench to score six points on 2-for-2 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Senior forward
Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA) added four points and junior forward
Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) snatched four rebounds.
The Lady Golden Bulls only shot 38 percent but canned 3-of-5 three-pointers and were 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Downer led the Lady Golden Bulls with eight points and four rebounds. She knocked down 2-of-3 three-pointers. Chelsea Faulhaber added six points off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting.
After a two-week five-game road stretch, the Lady Falcons finally return home on Saturday, January 25. They host crosstown rival Shaw University at Emery Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
