Turnovers, Missed Free Throws Hurt Lady Falcons In Loss To Shaw

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 14 points and sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added 11 points, but Saint Augustine's University lost to crosstown rival Shaw University 67-56 in a CIAA women's basketball contest before a packed crowd inside Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) added eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who outrebounded the taller Lady Bears 53-50 including a 20-19 edge on the offensive backboards. But the Lady Falcons (1-2 Southern Division, 5-3 CIAA, 10-7 overall) only made 6 of 16 free throws and committed 21 turnovers which the Lady Bears turned into 24 points. The points off turnovers led to a 44-24 points in the paint advantage for the Lady Bears.

"We didn't take care of the ball at all," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "It wasn't what Shaw was doing. It was us. It was very disappointing because I thought we were ready to play. When you turn it over 21 times and miss 10 free throws, the game will probably end up in a loss. Shaw capitalized off our turnovers. [The Lady Bears] were the better team today. It isn't a season-ending loss, but we have to learn from this game and get better."

Diamond Mitchell finished with 13 points and eight assists and Verdine Warner had 11 points, 10 assists and three blocks for the Lady Bears (3-0 Southern Division, 7-2 CIAA, 13-6 overall). Ariel Hatcher scored 10 points.

Walton's free throw gave the Lady Falcons their last lead at 45-44 with 11:15 left in the game. The Lady Bears finished the game on a 23-11 run to pick up the win.

The contest was tight early in the second half, befitting a contest between two rivals. McCombs hit a jumper for a 44-42 Lady Falcons lead, but the Lady Bears came right back on the other end to tie the game before going on their game-winning spurt.

Hyped by a packed crowd before the opening tip-off, the Lady Falcons blasted out the gate. McCombs swished a three-pointer for a 10-6 St. Aug lead and Jacobs added a corner jumper to stretch the margin to six points. The Lady Bears crept back in the game, tying the score at 28-28 with a little over five minutes left.

McCombs nailed a three-pointer for a 31-28 Lady Falcons lead. The Lady Bears ended the first half with a 6-2 run to take a 34-33 halftime lead.

Walton led the Lady Falcons with eight points while McCombs and Allen both added six points in the first half. Allen grabbed six rebounds and sophomore center Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) contributed four points, four rebounds and three blocks for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Lady Bears 11-8 in second chance points.

Mitchell had eight points and six assists and Hatcher added eight points and four rebounds for the Lady Bears in the first half. Bryann Guyton chipped in four points and four rebounds for the Lady Bears, who outscored the Lady Falcons 22-14 in the paint in the opening half.
