Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore forward
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) scored a career-high 20 points including 11 points in the last five minutes as Saint Augustine's University rallied late to nip Chowan University 73-72 for their fifth consecutive women's basketball victory at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, January 6, 2014.
The win streak is the longest for the Lady Falcons (2-0 CIAA, 7-4 overall) since the 2011-12 season when they won five in a row. The Lady Falcons kept the streak alive by outlasting a tough Chowan squad which topped CIAA powerhouse Shaw on Saturday for the first time in its school history.
"I am excited about our win," St. Aug Head Coach
Rachel Bullard said. "Great effort by both teams. Our ladies are a unit and we are playing good basketball right now."
Jacobs added seven rebounds and junior guard
Raneka Dunaway (Richmond, VA) added a career-high 12 points to go along with five steals and five assists for the Lady Falcons, who recorded 17 steals and forced 33 Chowan turnovers. Sophomore guard
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) and junior forward
Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) each added nine points, four steals and four rebounds and sophomore guard
Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) chipped in eight points for the Lady Falcons, who also got six rebounds from senior forward
Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA).
"
Terri Jacobs was huge for us," Bullard said. "She was aggressive on the boards and owned the paint on the offensive end.
Raneka Dunaway was great. She ended up with five steals by pressuring the ball. Our ladies woke up late in the second half and decided to pressure the ball which caused Chowan to turn the ball over."
Alisha Mobley scored 18 points to lead four double-figure scorers for the Hawks (1-2 CIAA, 7-6 overall). Rachel Gostomski and RyJae Anderson both scored 13 points and Courtni Williams finished with 12 points for the Hawks, who made 9 of 14 three-point attempts for 64 percent.
Anderson swished a three-pointer for a 64-56 Chowan lead with 5:29 left before the Falcons went on a 17-8 run. Jacobs scored 11 points during the spurt including a jumper to put the Lady Falcons ahead 70-68 with 1:09 left.
Williams tied the score with a layup, but Jacobs answered with two free throws for a 72-70 Falcons lead with 22 seconds left. After a Hawks' miss, Jacobs canned another free throw for a three-point lead with seven ticks left.
The Hawks had a chance to tie when Williams was fouled shooting a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left. She made the first two, but missed the third which clinched the win for the Lady Falcons.
After winning two home games to start the New Year, the Lady Falcons will embark on a five-game road stretch starting with Bowie State University on Thursday, January 9. Tip off against Bowie State is set for 5:30 p.m. in Bowie, Md.
