Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Sr./Temple Hills, Md.) scored 14 points and guard Shelby Stokes (So./Cleveland, OH) added 10 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 75-68 non-conference women's basketball loss to fellow CIAA member Virginia Union University at Barco-Stevens Hall on Monday, November 24, 2014.
Guard LaKiya Rouse (Jr./Greensboro, NC) added eight points, seven rebounds and four assists and guard Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) chipped in eight points, six rebounds and four assists for the Lady Falcons, who shot 52 percent in the first half to take a 32-29 halftime lead.
The Lady Falcons (1-2 overall) were eventually undone by 23 turnovers which allowed the Lady Panthers to break away from a 47-47 tie at the 12:52 mark of the second half. The Lady Panthers (2-1 overall) scored 23 points off the Lady Falcons' turnovers.
"When you have 23 turnovers, you are not going to be successful," SAU Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "They capitalized off our turnovers."
Led by Rouse, Walton and Stokes (six rebounds), the Lady Falcons outrebounded the Lady Panthers 47-34 to stay in contention. The Lady Falcons scored 22 second-chance points but could never overtake the Lady Panthers in the latter stages of the second half.
Rouse and Wilson each scored eight points in the first half for the Lady Falcons, who built a seven-point lead. Guard Shanika Harris (Jr./Richmond, VA) buried a three-pointer off Walton's assist with 2:22 in the first half to expand the Lady Falcons' lead to 30-23. The half ended with the Lady Falcons leading at halftime.
The contest was a homecoming for Harris, senior Raneka Dunaway and senior forward Briana Arrington. All three players hail from Richmond, Va. Walton grew up in nearby Chesterfield, Va.
Ashle Freeman scored 20 points and added seven steals for the Lady Panthers, who also got 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks from Lady Walker. Jasmin Dancy contributed 17 points.
The Lady Falcons will play their second game in two days when they visit Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Va., on Tuesday, November 24, 2014. Game time is 4 p.m.
"It is back to the drawing board," Bullard said. "We are going to keep working until we find something that works for us."
The Lady Falcons and Lady Panthers will meet again in Raleigh, N.C., at Emery Gymnasium January 12, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. This time, the contest will count as a CIAA game.
