Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Preseason All-CIAA guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) scored 19 points and forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) added 16 points and 13 rebounds as Saint Augustine's University outlasted Chowan University 78-76 in a non-conference women's basketball game between CIAA teams at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 2, 2014.
Guard Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) chipped in 14 points, five assists and three steals for the Lady Falcons, who evened their record at 3-3. Guard Shanika Harris (Jr./Richmond, VA) had nine points and six rebounds while guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) and guard LaKiya Rouse (Jr./Greensboro, NC) both scored eight points for the Lady Falcons.
The contest did not count in the league standings, but it had the intensity of a conference game. The lead changed hands seven times in the final 7:37 as both teams battled hard.
Down 74-73 at the 2:40 mark, the Lady Falcons made one final push. They outscored the Hawks 5-2 with the final five points coming on free throws. The Lady Falcons were 5 of 8 at the free throw line while holding Chowan to 0 of 6 shooting from the floor. The Hawks' last miss was a desperation three-pointer from halfcourt after Harris of the Lady Falcons made one of two free throws for a 78-76 lead with five seconds left.
"We are very fired up about our win," Lady Falcons' Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "Chowan is a good team despite its record (0-5 overall). They played hard but we found a way to stay focused and pulled out the win. Falcons fly high and that's exactly what we did this evening."
The Lady Falcons edged the Hawks by making more free throws (23-14) overall and shooting 52 percent in the second half. McCombs scored 11 points on 3 of 5 shooting including 1 of 2 three-pointers in addition to 4 of 4 free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes. Jacobs added nine points on 4 of 8 shooting in the second half.
McCombs scored nine points in the first five minutes of the second half to spark the Lady Falcons to a nine-point lead. The Hawks rallied to take the lead at 58-57 on a jumper by Danielle Witherspoon at the 10:24 mark. The lead would then change hands seven times before the Lady Falcons slipped past the Hawks.
The Hawks were led by 14 points from Alisha Mobley and 13 points from Chantel Roberts. Naima Harrington and Witherspoon each added nine points for Chowan, which shot 39 percent in the second half.
The Hawks built a 34-26 first-half lead, but the Lady Falcons went on a 15-4 run in the last five minutes to go ahead 41-38 at halftime. Walton led the Lady Falcons with nine points while McCombs added eight points and Jacobs added seven points and nine rebounds in the first half. Roberts paced the Hawks with seven first-half points.
The Lady Falcons are back on the court Monday, December 15, at Paine College in Augusta, Ga. Game time is 7 p.m.
