Lady Falcons Fall Late to Fayetteville State 81-74

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 18 points and senior guard Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) added 15 points, but Saint Augustine's University lost 81-74 to Fayetteville State University in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

McCombs made 7-of-14 shots including four three-pointers and Spencer was 4-of-8 from the floor for the Lady Falcons (1-3 Southern Division, 5-4 CIAA, 10-8 overall). Sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added nine points and four steals off the bench. Senior forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) snatched 14 rebounds off the bench and junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) came off the bench to haul in 12 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Lady Broncos 27-12 in bench points.

Despite being outsized, the Lady Falcons held a 51-35 rebounding advantage including a 26-5 margin on the offensive boards. It led to the Lady Falcons outscoring the Lady Broncos 21-8 in second chance points.

But the rebounding and depth of the Lady Falcons weren't enough to offset the field-goal shooting of the Lady Broncos, who made 56 percent of their shots. The Lady Broncos also made five more free throws despite the Lady Falcons shooting a better percentage from the charity stripe. The Lady Broncos were 28-of-48 from the free-throw line and the Lady Falcons were 23-of-34. The Lady Broncos also outscored the Lady Falcons 40-28 in the paint.

"I thought we played hard, but we didn't capitalize at the free-throw line and we allowed them to have more points in the paint than we did," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "It is a lesson learned. We have got to keep working."

Calvin Amber scored 30 points for the Lady Broncos including 18 in the second half. Deja Middleton contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks while De'Aira Smith had 12 points.

Smith scored 10 and Calvin added eight points in the final 6:52 to help the Lady Broncos break away from a 56-56 tie for the win. The Lady Broncos (4-0 Southern Division, 8-2 CIAA, 15-4 overall) remained unbeaten in the Southern Division.

In the first half, McCombs hit two three-pointers to give the Lady Falcons a 6-0 lead. The Lady Falcons led by as many as 10 before the Lady Broncos made a late run to tie the game 37-37 at halftime.

McCombs of the Lady Falcons led all first-half scorers with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Allen pulled down 10 rebounds and added six points. For the Lady Broncos, Calvin scored 12 points and Middleton added eight points.

After two straight home games, the Lady Falcons visit Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., on Monday, February 3. The contest starts 5:30 p.m. The CIAA Southern Division contest was originally scheduled on January 29 but was moved to the current date due to a winter storm.
