Lady Falcons Fall Late Against Shaw 66-62

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 66-62 CIAA women's basketball loss to crosstown rival Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday, February 15, 2014.

Ten players scored for the Lady Falcons. Sophomore guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) and senior forward Victoria Davis (San Diego, CA) each added eight points. Davis also led the Lady Falcons with 10 rebounds and collected four steals. The 10 rebounds tied a career-high for Davis. Senior Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, VA) chipped in seven points.

Keyed by their offensive balance and full-court defensive press, the Lady Falcons led much of the second half. Spencer nailed a short jumper for a 55-47 Lady Falcons lead with 7:09 left. By then, the Lady Falcons had forced 25 Shaw turnovers. Victory slipped out of the Lady Falcons' grasp when the Lady Bears finished the contest on a 19-7 run.

"We played a tough game," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "We couldn't close it out in the end because our offense became stagnant and we turned the ball over. I'm proud of our effort but we have to play 40 minutes of basketball. Thirty-five minutes won't do."

Sophomore forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) added five points, eight rebounds and two blocks while freshman forward Kaleisha Moore (Kinston, NC) had five points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) finished with six points, four rebounds and four steals for the Lady Falcons. Kaula Jacks scored 20 points and Verdine Warner had 19 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks for the Lady Bears, the defending CIAA champions.

The Lady Falcons fell to 1-6 in the Southern Division, 5-8 in the CIAA and 10-12 overall. They have lost six straight games, but their last five defeats have been by an average of 3.8 points. The Lady Bears upped their record to 5-2 in the Southern Division, 9-4 in the CIAA and 15-8 overall.

The Lady Falcons held their own against the taller Lady Bears inside. Both teams grabbed 44 rebounds but the Lady Falcons held a 17-10 edge on the offensive glass which led to 16-11 advantage in second-chance points. The visitors also forced 28 turnovers but committed 26 turnovers and shot 31 percent. The Lady Bears made 42 percent of their shots.

The Lady Bears led by as much as 13 points in the first half. They were ahead 28-15 around the six-minute mark when the Lady Falcons went on a furious rally. Fueled by their full-court press, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 21-2 to go into halftime with a 36-30 lead. The pressure forced the Lady Bears to commit seven of their 14 first-half turnovers during that stretch.

McCombs scored five points and Wilson, Davis, and Jacobs each scored four points to lead the late rally. McCombs scored eight points in the first half for the Lady Falcons, who had eight players score in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Falcons outrebounded the taller Lady Bears 24-22 including a 9-6 edge on the offensive boards. They also scored 11 points off the Lady Bears' turnovers. Jacks and Warner both scored 10 first-half points for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Falcons host Johnson C. Smith University at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. The contest is designated as the Play 4Kay game to raise breast cancer awareness.
