McCombs Scores 22 For Lady Falcons In 75-74 Loss To Fayetteville State

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) scored 22 points for Saint Augustine's University, but the Lady Falcons lost to Fayetteville State University 75-74 in the final CIAA women's basketball contest of the season for both teams at Capel Arena on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

Both teams will play in the CIAA Tournament which starts next week at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The Lady Falcons will play on Tuesday, February 25 against an opponent yet to be determined.

The Lady Falcons (3-7 Southern Division, 7-9 CIAA, 12-13 overall) lost twice to CIAA co-leader Fayetteville State (8-2 Southern Division, 12-4 CIAA, 19-6 overall) by an average of four points this season. Their last six losses have been by an average of 3.3 points.

"We played hard but came up short," St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said about the season finale. "Fayetteville State is a good team but this was a tough loss for us. My ladies fought hard. We have to shake this one off and prepare for next week."

The Lady Falcons led much of the second half. The Lady Broncos rallied, but guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) scored a layup for a 74-73 Lady Falcons' lead with 39 seconds left. Deja Middleton of the Lady Broncos scored the game-winning layup with seven seconds left.

McCombs connected on 8-of-15 shots including 6-of-11 three-pointers. She also added two steals for the Lady Falcons.

Wilson added 11 points and three steals. Sophomore guard Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, N.C) came off the bench to score 10 points and added two steals for the Lady Falcons, who recorded 17 steals and forced 28 turnovers which led to 25 points.

The Lady Falcons forced 20 first-half turnovers which led to 20 points and a 36-29 halftime lead. McCombs had 13 points in the first half on 5-of-9 shooting including 3-of-6 from behind the three-point arc.

The Lady Falcons built a nine-point lead in the second half before the Lady Broncos came back. The Lady Broncos took their first lead in the second half at 60-58 on a three-pointer by Amber Calvin. The Lady Falcons answered with a McCombs three-pointer for a 69-66 lead with 2:38 remaining. The Lady Broncos re-gained the lead at 73-72 with 1:08 left before Wilson put the Lady Falcons in front for the final time with her layup.

Sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) added seven points, six assists and two steals off the bench for the Lady Falcons. Sophomore forward Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) had six points and nine rebounds off the bench and junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) had six points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench.

Calvin of the Lady Broncos led all scorers with 27 points. Akysia Resper added 21 points and Middleton added 15 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.

The Lady Falcons were 7-of-14 behind the three-point line for 50 percent. They shot 38 percent overall.

The Lady Broncos shot 42 percent from the floor. They made 22-of-27 free throw attempts for 81.5 percent.
