Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) led Saint Augustine's University with 13 points, nine assists and two steals, but the Lady Falcons lost 65-62 to Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 8, 2014.
Sophomore guard
Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, MD) added 11 points and sophomore forward
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) had nine points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Lady Falcons, who outrebounded the Lady Rams 23-15 on the offensive glass which led to 23 second-chance points. Their aggressiveness on the offensive boards led to the Lady Falcons controlling much of the second half coming out of a 36-36 halftime tie.
The Lady Falcons led 60-51 on a layup by sophomore guard
Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) with 6:50 left. Jasmine Elum led a Lady Rams' charge with two-three pointers with the second three giving the Lady Rams a 62-60 lead with 2:28 remaining. Walton tied the game on a layup, but the Lady Rams scored a layup to regain the two-point lead.
The Rams added a free throw for a 65-62 lead with six seconds left. The Lady Falcons misfired on a three-pointer before time expired.
"It was a tough loss," St. Aug Head Coach
Rachel Bullard said. "When you don't execute at the end of the game, this is what will happen. We scored two points the last seven minutes. That is not OK. We didn't box out at the end of the game. That is not OK. We did not do the little things it takes to finish a game so this is the result that you get."
Senior guard
Ebony Spencer grabbed nine rebounds and freshman forward
Kaleisha Moore (Kinston, NC) had career-highs of eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Falcons (1-5 Southern Division, 5-7 CIAA, 10-11 overall). Vanessa Welton scored all 16 of her points in the first half and Elum added 10 points for the Lady Rams (3-3 Southern Division, 7-5 CIAA, 13-9 overall).
The Lady Rams built an eight-point first-half lead, but a late charge by the Lady Falcons tied the score 36-36 at halftime. The Lady Falcons came back by beating the Lady Rams on the boards 28-21 including a 16-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. It led to 14 second-chance points to offset 31 percent shooting.
Walton led a balanced scoring attack with eight first-half points for the Lady Falcons. Wilson and Moore both scored six points while Spencer and Jacobs each added five points and four rebounds.
The Lady Falcons host Johnson C. Smith University at Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 12. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
