Lady Falcons Trounce Virginia Union 16-3 At CIAA Softball Round-Up

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University pounded out 12 hits to thump Virginia Union University 16-3 in the CIAA Softball Round-Up at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Monday, March 24, 2014.

The Lady Falcons won two of three games at the Round-Up, which started Saturday, March 22. They are 3-3 in the CIAA and 8-16 overall. Virginia Union fell to 0-4 in the CIAA and 0-5 overall.

Senior Michelle Shackelford (Bowie, MD) led the Lady Falcons with three RBIs. Freshman Korey Hill (Virginia Beach, VA) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, and freshman Meranda Zanni (Phoenix, OR) was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.

Junior Taylor Walters (Douglasville, GA) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and senior LaKeisha Ford (Madison Heights, VA) was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Jo'Landa White (Leland, NC) was 1-for-1 with a solo homer and three runs scored, and freshman Daja White (Leland, NC) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Cierra Neal (New Hill, NC) scored two runs.

Zanni tossed a three-hitter in five innings for the win. She struck out six batters and walked two.

Bolstered by Renesha Chiles' two-run homer, Virginia Union led 3-0 in the top of the first inning. The Lady Falcons came right back with six runs in the first inning. They added six runs in the second inning for 12-3 lead. The Lady Falcons scored two runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning for the final score.

The Lady Falcons will look to extend their two-game winning streak against Fayetteville State University on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Both teams will play a doubleheader scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. at Buffaloe Road Park in Raleigh, N.C. This is the CIAA Southern Division opener for the Lady Falcons.
