Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Pitchers
Hannah Stutts (Jr./Statesville, NC) and
Korey Hill (Fr./Virginia Beach, VA) of Saint Augustine's University combined on a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 CIAA softball win over Fayetteville State University in the first game of a Senior Day doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park on Thursday, April 10, 2014. The Lady Falcons lost the second game 8-2.
With the split, the Lady Falcons (8-6 CIAA, 13-19 overall) are tied for second place in the Southern Division with Johnson C. Smith University at 5-3. Both teams are two games behind leader Winston-Salem State University with two division games left. Fayetteville State (9-7 CIAA, 11-20 overall) is fourth in the division at 6-4. The top four teams in the Southern Division advance to the CIAA Softball Tournament, which will be held April 17-19 in Petersburg, Va.
The Lady Falcons close out the regular season against crosstown rival Shaw University on Friday, April 11, at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Three seniors were honored during a ceremony between the first and second games. They were
LaKeisha Ford (Madison Heights, VA),
Jennifer Plair (Hampton, VA) and
Michelle Shackelford (Bowie, MD).
In the first game, Stutts allowed one hit, struck out four batters and walked none in four innings. Hill gave up one hit, fanned two batters and walked one batter in three innings for the win after relieving Stutts in the fifth.
The contest turned into a pitching duel between the St. Aug pitchers and Kyrin Walter of the Lady Broncos, who fired a three-hitter in six innings. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Lady Falcons scored all four runs.
Cierra Neal (Jr./New Hill, NC) and
Meranda Zanni (Fr./Phoenix, OR) both scored on an outfield error and
Taylor Walters (Jr./Douglasville, GA) scored on an RBI single by
Jo'Landa White (Jr./Leland, NC).
Daja White (Soph./Leland, NC) scored her sister
Jo'Landa White on an RBI single.
In the second game, the Lady Broncos led 2-0 in the top of the second inning, but the Lady Falcons tied the score in the bottom of the inning.
Daja White and
Jo'Landa White both scored on Hill's RBI single. The game stayed tied until the fourth inning when the Lady Broncos scored four runs for a 6-2 lead. The Lady Broncos added two more runs in the seventh inning for the final score.
