Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University ended the regular season by defeating crosstown nemesis Shaw University 11-7 and 10-1 in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Friday, April 11, 2014.
The Lady Falcons finished second in the Southern Division (7-3) for the second year in a row. They will be the division's No. 2 seed in the CIAA Softball Tournament, which will be held April 17-19 in Petersburg, Va.
The Lady Falcons finished 10-6 in the CIAA and 15-19 overall. Shaw finished 3-7 in the Southern Division, 3-11 in the CIAA and 4-22 overall.
In the first game, the Lady Falcons scored six runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie.
LaKeisha Ford (Sr./Madison, VA) scored first on an infield error and
Hannah Stutts (Jr./Statesville, NC) scored on an RBI double by
Cierra Neal (Jr./New Hill, NC).
Michelle Shackelford (Sr./Bowie, MD) scored on a fielder's choice by
Korey Hill (Fr./Virginia Beach, VA) and Neal scored on an RBI single by
Daja White (Soph./Leland, NC). Both Hill and White scored on an outfield error. The Lady Bears scored two runs in the seventh for the final score.
Daja White went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs for the Lady Falcons. Stutts went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in addition to getting the pitching win. She struck out five batters, allowed four hits and gave up two runs in the final three and two-third innings for the victory.
The Lady Bears led 2-0 in the first inning, but the Lady Falcons tied the game in the second on a two-run homer by Stutts which also scored Ford. The Lady Falcons took a 3-2 lead in the third when
Ashia Nicholson (Soph./Asheboro, NC) scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Shackelford. The lead stretched to 5-2 in the fourth on
Daja White's two-run homer which also scored
Meranda Zanni (Fr./Phoenix, OR). The Lady Bears tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth before the Lady Falcons pulled away in the seventh.
The Lady Falcons dominated the second game. They led 2-0 in the first inning on a Hill single which scored Neal and a single by
Taylor Walters (Jr./Douglasville, GA) which scored Hill.
Jo'Landa White (Jr./Leland, NC) singled in Hill in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Falcons broke the game open in the fourth inning with five runs.
Daja White hit a two-run single to Zanni and Shackelford and Walters singled in Hill. Ford cracked a two-RBI single to score
Daja White and Walters for an 8-0 lead. Shaw scored one run in the fifth, but Tyanna Peterson (Fr./Brooklyn Park, Minn.) hit a two-run double to score Walters and Ford which ended the game.
Walters went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Ford went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Falcons, who had 14 hits.
Daja White went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Hill went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Shackelford went 3-for-3.
Stutts earned the pitching win after allowing one hit, one strikeout and no runs in the first two innings as a starter. Her and Zanni combined on a three-hitter as Zanni pitched the remaining four innings. Zanni had four strikeouts and two walks in addition to allowing two hits and one run.
