St. Aug Unbeaten In Winner's Bracket At CIAA Softball Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, Va. – All-CIAA First-Team shortstop Daja White (Soph./Leland, NC) went 7-for-8 with five RBIs and six runs scored and Hannah Stutts (Jr./Statesville, NC) picked up two pitching wins to help Saint Augustine's University take a pair of victories on the first day of the CIAA Softball Tournament at Petersburg Softball Sports Complex Thursday, April 17, 2014. The Lady Falcons, seeded second in the Southern Division, defeated Virginia Union University 17-5 and Virginia State 7-5.

The Lady Falcons (17-19 overall) advanced to the second day of the tournament unbeaten in the winner's bracket for the first time in recent memory. They will take on Winston-Salem State University on the Virginia State University softball field Friday, April 18, at 12:30 p.m. The Lady Falcons split the two-game regular-season doubleheader with Winston-Salem State, the top-seed in the Southern Division.

"I am super proud of the girls," St. Aug Head Coach Nikki Bumpass said about Thursday's wins.

Daja White was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and four runs scored against Virginia Union, the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division. Ashia Nicholson (Jr./Asheboro, NC) went 2-for-3 with four RBIs including a three-run homer and two runs scored. Jo'Landa White (Jr./Leland, NC) went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

All-CIAA Rookie Meranda Zanni (Fr./Virginia Beach, VA) went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored and All-CIAA First-Teamer Cierra Neal (Jr./New Hill, NC) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Taylor Walters (Jr./Douglasville, GA) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Stutts went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Meghan Mahon (Fr./Houston, TX) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who had 19 hits.

Stutts threw a no-hitter and recorded three strikeouts in two innings for the win. Korey Hill (Fr./Virginia Beach, VA) threw one and one-third innings and Zanni pitched one and two-third innings as the trio combined on a three-hitter in the five-inning game.

The Lady Falcons took charge from the start, scoring six runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second for a 13-0 lead. In the first inning, Daja White hit an RBI single to score Zanni and Daja White later scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead. Stutts scored Walters with a single and Nicholson cracked a three-run homer over the left field fence for a 6-0 lead. Nicholson scored Stutts and Jo'Landa White in addition to herself with the homer.

In the second inning, Neal scored on a Zanni double and Zanni scored on a Daja White single. Jo'Landa White (Jr./Leland, NC) hit a two-run single to score Daja White and Walters, and Nicholson singled to score Jo'Landa White for an 11-0 lead.

An RBI bunt single by LaKeisha Ford (Sr./Madison Heights, VA) scored Mahon, and Nicholson stole home for a 13-0 lead. Virginia Union scored one run in the third, but the Lady Falcons added three more runs in the same inning. Daja White scored on a single by Jo'Landa White, who later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Ford. Neal hit an RBI single to score Mahon to increase the Lady Falcons' lead to 16-1. The Lady Panthers scored four runs in the fourth and Peterson doubled home Daja White in the same inning for the final score in the five-inning game.

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Falcons raced to a 4-0 lead against Virginia State, the top-seed in the Northern Division, in the third inning of the second game. Daja White started the rally with an RBI single which scored Neal. Zanni scored on an error and Daja White scored on a sacrifice fly by Jo'Landa White. Walters scored on a Nicholson double.

In the fourth inning, Daja White tripled to score Neal. White later scored on an error for a 6-0 lead.

Virginia State rallied between the fifth and sixth innings. They scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to threaten the Lady Falcons, but Daja White hit an RBI double to score to score Zanni in the sixth for a 7-4 lead. Virginia State scored one run in the seventh, and was in position to score more with runners on third and second, but the Lady Falcons turned a double play to end the game.

Daja White went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored Virginia State. Nicholson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Zanni went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jo'Landa White went 2-for-3 with one RBI. The Lady Falcons compiled 11 hits against CIAA Player of the Year Jessica Mattia of Virginia State. They rank among the nation's Division II leaders in batting average.

Stutts earned her second win of the day after scattering six hits in three and one-third innings. Zanni was credited with the save after pitching three and two-third innings.
