Lady Falcons Get Rare Softball Win Over Winston-Salem State In Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Cierra Neal (Jr./New Hill, NC) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to help Saint Augustine's University defeat Winston-Salem State University for the first time in more than 10 years on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park. The Lady Falcons won the first game 6-3 and lost the second game 6-3.

The Lady Falcons beat Winston-Salem State for the first time since 1996 although no scores from the 2002 and 1997 seasons are listed in the ncaa.org database. The doubleheader split left the Lady Falcons (7-5 CIAA, 12-18 overall) tied for second with Fayetteville State University and Johnson C. Smith University in the Southern Division at 4-2. The Lady Falcons handed Winston-Salem State (12-2 CIAA, 22-11 overall) its first division loss and second conference defeat, but the Lady Rams remain in first place at 7-1 in the Southern Division.

Meranda Zanni (Fr./Phoenix, OR) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Taylor Walters (Jr./Douglasville, GA) went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game for the Lady Falcons. Jo'Landa White (Jr./Leland, NC) added one RBI to her league-leading total of 39. Hannah Stutts (Jr./Statesville, NC) picked up the win after scattering seven hits, striking out three and walking none in seven complete innings.

The Lady Falcons struck first in the third inning when Zanni scored on Walters' single. The Lady Rams tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Zanni singled to score Meghan Mahon (Fr./Houston, TX), and Neal scored on an infield error. Jo'Landa White popped up a sacrifice fly to score Zanni for a 4-1 lead.

Neal padded the lead to 6-1 in the sixth with a two-run double which scored LaKeisha Ford (Sr./Madison Heights, VA) and Michelle Shackelford (Sr./Bowie MD). The Lady Rams rallied for two runs in the seventh but the Lady Falcons held on for the win.

The second game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Katrina Bartlett hit a three-run homer to give the Lady Rams a 3-0 lead. The Lady Falcons cut the margin to 3-2 in the fifth inning on Neal's RBI groundout which scored Shackelford, and Zanni's single which scored Ford.

The Lady Rams pushed their lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but the lead was trimmed to 5-3 after Daja White (Fr./Leland, NC) scored on a passed ball in the bottom sixth. The Lady Rams added a run in the seventh inning to finish the scoring.

Zanni went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Lady Falcons. Daja White went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

The contests were designated as Softball Pink Games for the Lady Falcons to raise breast cancer awareness. On Thursday, April 10, the Lady Falcons will host Fayetteville State University in a doubleheader on Senior Day at Buffaloe Road Park. The starting times are 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. This will be the last home games for seniors Shackelford, Ford and Jennifer Plair (Hampton, VA). Admission is free.
