Lady Falcons Fall To Fayetteville State In Basketball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Guard Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) scored 15 points and guard LaKiya Rouse added 12 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 78-62 CIAA women's basketball loss to Fayetteville State University at Capel Arena on Saturday, January 31, 2015.

The Lady Falcons dropped to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Division. The Lady Broncos upped their record to 8-12 overall and 1-4 in the Southern Division.

Guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) added 11 points and guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) had nine points and eight rebounds for the Lady Falcons. Forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) chipped in eight rebounds.

The Lady Falcons led 29-26 at halftime, but shot 25 percent in the second half. The Lady Broncos shot 71 percent in the final 20 minutes as they outscored the Lady Falcons 52-33. For the contest, the Lady Broncos connected on 52 percent of their shots compared to 27 percent for the Lady Falcons.

"It was a tough loss today," Lady Falcons' Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "We came out flat and Fayetteville State capitalized."

The Lady Broncos led by 11 points for the second time in the second half with 10:49 remaining, but McCombs sparked a Lady Falcons' rally with three three-pointers to slice the deficit to 52-50. The Lady Broncos pulled away with a 26-12 run for the final score.

Doreen Richardson led five double-figure scorers with 17 points for the Lady Broncos, and she added 10 assists. Bria Robinson added 14 points and four blocks while Deja Middleton finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks as the Lady Broncos scored 50 points in the paint and recorded 12 blocks. Makayla Williams and Jordan Hill scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

The Lady Falcons got to the free-throw line frequently, making 20 of 31 attempts. They also scored 23 points off 25 Lady Bronco turnovers. Despite being outsized, the Lady Falcons grabbed more offensive rebounds (22-10) which led to 12 second chance points, but the Lady Broncos capitalized off 26 Lady Falcon turnovers for 20 points.

Walton scored eight points and Wilson added six points for the Lady Falcons in the first half. Rouse contributed five points and six rebounds as the Lady Falcons made 9 of 13 free throws in the first 20 minutes. Richardson and Williams each had five points and Middleton snatched 10 rebounds in the first half.

The Lady Falcons visit Virginia State University at Daniel Gymnasium in Ettrick, Va., on Wednesday, February 4. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
