Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Porscha Walton led five double-figure scorers with 19 points to lift Saint Augustine's University to an 84-74 CIAA women's basketball win over Bowie State University in the first game on the newly renamed Harvey D. Heartley Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, January 8, 2015.
The Lady Falcons improved to 2-1 in the CIAA and 8-4 overall. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 1-3 in the CIAA and 6-7 overall.
Forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds, her second straight double-double in a game for the Lady Falcons. Both guards Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) and Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) poured in 16 points apiece and forward Briana Arrington (Jr./Richmond, VA) came off the bench to score 10 points. Guard LaKiya Rouse (Jr./Greensboro, NC) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Donia Naylor with 20 points and 14 rebounds. She led four Lady Bulldogs in double figures. Jourdan Stanhope scored 14 points off the bench and Ty-Nita Baker had 12 points. Kyah Proctor chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Falcons started slowly, but were hard to stop once they got in rhythm. Aided by their pressure defense, the hosts spurted past the Lady Bulldogs in the first half and never looked back in building a double-digit lead in the second half.
"What a game tonight," Lady Falcons' Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "I am so excited for our Lady Falcons. We played hard, fought hard and executed the game plan. Tonight's game was a team effort."
The Lady Falcons gain momentum late in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs led 24-16 with 4:18 left when the Lady Falcons made their move. McCombs buried a corner jumper to cap an 8-0 run which tied the score.
After an Alauna Jackson layup gave the Lady Bulldogs a two-point lead with 53 seconds remaining, the Lady Falcons ended the half on another run, this time outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 7-0 to go into halftime leading 31-26. Arrington keyed the rally with four points.
The second half was all Lady Falcons. The Lady Bulldogs kept pace in the early minutes, but the Lady Falcons steadily increased their lead to double figures. The Lady Falcons used another big run, this time outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 11-0, to build a 55-41 lead near the midway mark of the second half. The Lady Bulldogs sliced the margin to single digits briefly, but Walton canned 10 of 10 free throw attempts down the stretch to keep the Lady Bulldogs at bay.
Her performance at the charity stripe was indicative of how the Lady Falcons shot free throws the entire game. They were 38 of 51 from the free throw line for 75 percent, with Walton and Jacobs combining to hit 25 of 29 free throw attempts. Walton was 15 of 16 as she scored all 19 of her points in the second half. Jacobs made 10 of 13 free throws.
"I am so proud of the ladies because they stepped it up on the defensive end," Bullard said. "Shooting 38 of 51 [free throws] was an awesome bonus as well."
Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs was 9 of 14 from the free throw line for 64 percent. The Falcons also forced 23 turnovers for 26 points and outrebounded the taller Lady Bulldogs 44-42 including 19-15 on the offensive glass.
The Lady Falcons will host their second home game in three days on Saturday, January 10. The Lincoln (Pa.) University comes to Raleigh, N.C., for a CIAA tilt at 2 p.m.
"We have to get prepared for a solid Lincoln team on Saturday," Bullard said.
