Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Ke-Ashe Lee (So./Roanoke, VA) scored a career-high 22 points as Saint Augustine's University rallied to nip Bluefield State College 75-74 in overtime in a women's college basketball thriller at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015.
The victory was the first for the Lady Falcons this season, and it came in exciting fashion. The Lady Falcons rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, then prevailed when Lyndsay Hatfield's last-second contested layup banked off the glass and rolled around several times before rimming out.
The Lady Falcons outlasted the Lady Blues with six players in uniform, and each player contributed to the win in their home opener. Lee added five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Sycoya Dorsey (Jr./Richmond, VA) added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Teeria Vaughn (Jr./Waterboro, SC) posted a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Khadijah Payne (So./Gloucester, VA) added 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Shakeisha Washington (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 10 points, and Ashanti Reid (Jr./Statesville, NC) recorded six points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Despite being short-handed, the Lady Falcons more than held their own on the glass. They outrebounded the Lady Blues 52-48 including a 23-21 edge in offensive rebounds. They also were the more aggressive team, making 18 of 33 free throw attempts compared to 10 of 15 for the Lady Blues.
"I am proud of my team for sticking together and staying focused on our game plan, especially in overtime," Interim Head Coach Jarita Crump of the Lady Falcons said. "They were very scrappy and played with all their heart. That's all I could ask for."
The Lady Falcons trailed much of the contest but mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter. Down 54-47 at the 8:04 mark, the Lady Falcons went on an 11-3 run to take their first lead since the first quarter. Lee knocked down a three-pointer for a 58-57 lead with 3:02 remaining in regulation.
Dorsey canned a three-pointer to extend the lead to 68-63 with 18 seconds left, but the Lady Blues scored the final five points to force overtime including a three-pointer by Chaunte McDowell with three seconds left.
The Lady Falcons led 75-72 in overtime on Dorsey's layup with 52 seconds left, but Tanasia Blake's layup pulled the Lady Blues within a point. The Lady Blues regained possession with eight seconds left, but Hatfield's layup attempt was fortunately off the mark, giving the Lady Falcons the win.
McDowell paced Lady Blues (0-4 overall) with a game-high 21 points. Blake added 18 points and Hatfield chipped in 16 points. Nine Lady Blues played against the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Falcons (1-4 overall) will play in the IUP-Lodestar Classic in Indiana, Pa., during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. They will face Indiana (Pa.) University on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. and Edinboro University on Sunday, Nov. 29, at 12 p.m.
