Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Sycoya Dorsey (Jr./Richmond, VA) scored 13 points as Saint Augustine's University fought back from a 15-point second-half deficit in a 54-48 women's basketball loss to the University of Mount Olive at Kornegay Arena on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015.
The Lady Falcons staged a furious rally after trailing 28-13 early in the third quarter. Dorsey capped a 30-14 run with a layup to put the Lady Falcons ahead 43-42 with 5:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. After Dorsey's bucket, the Trojans went on a 12-5 run to clinch the victory.
Both Dorsey and Shakeisha Washington (Jr./Atlanta, GA) sparked the Lady Falcons in the second half. Dorsey scored 11 points and Washington scored all 11 of her points in the final 20 minutes. Washington was 3-for-5 behind the three-point arc in the second half.
Ke-Ashe Lee (So./Roanoke, VA) also scored in double figures for the Lady Falcons, finishing with 12 points. Daria Simmons led the Trojans (5-4 overall) with 21 points and nine steals. Arieal Johnson added nine points and 11 rebounds.
Despite shooting 35 percent, the Lady Falcons stayed in the contest with their defense. They scored 26 points off 19 turnovers by the Trojans, who shot 38 percent from the field. The Lady Falcons recorded 10 steals, led by three from Dorsey. Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC), Teeria Vaughan (Jr./Waterboro, SC) and Lee each had two steals.
The Lady Falcons led 1-0 before the contest started. Khadijah Payne (So./Gloucester, VA) made the first of two free throw attempts after a technical foul was called on the Trojans. They did not lead again until the fourth quarter.
The Trojans raced out to a double-digit lead once the game began. They led 21-4 in the second quarter before the Lady Falcons closed within 25-13 by halftime.
The Lady Falcons took charge in the second half, outscoring Mount Olive 35-29. They won the third quarter 20-14 to slice the deficit to 39-33 before making things interesting in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Falcons (3-7 overall) will host three home games in five days starting Tuesday, Dec. 15, against Virginia State University at Emery Gymnasium. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
The contest is the CIAA opener for the Lady Falcons.
