Slow Start Stymies Lady Falcons In Women's Basketball Loss To Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) scored 20 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Saint Augustine's University, but the Lady Falcons started slowly in a 90-76 CIAA women's basketball loss to crosstown rival Shaw University on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 14, 2015.
 
The contest was designated as the Play 4Kay game. The Lady Falcons wore pink uniforms and the Lady Bears wore pink socks to raise breast cancer awareness.
 
The Lady Falcons fell to 2-6 in the Southern Division and 11-12 overall. They are fifth in the Southern Division with two games left in the regular season.
 
The Lady Bears upped their record to 6-2 in the Southern Division and 16-10 overall. They are second in the Southern Division.
 
McCombs added five rebounds and five assists for the Lady Falcons, who shot 33 percent. Guard LaKiya Rouse (Jr./Greensboro, NC) scored 13 points while forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) and guard Raneka Dunaway (Sr./Richmond, VA) each added 12 points. Dunaway tied a career-high against the Lady Bears while Rouse and Jacobs each contributed seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Falcons never recovered from a 24-6 deficit midway in the first half. The Lady Bears stretched the margin to 22 points before taking a 43-26 halftime lead.
"We dug ourselves in a big hole and it was tough to come out of," Lady Falcons' Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "Defensive intensity and turnovers hurt us tremendously."
 
Led by 14 points from McCombs, 12 points from Jacobs and 11 points from Rouse, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 50-47 in the second half. The Lady Falcons rallied within 84-76 on Dunaway's three-pointer with 1:47 remaining, but the Lady Bears scored the final six points for the victory. The Lady Bears led the entire game.
 
Verdine Warner led the Lady Bears with 25 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Kaula Jacks added 17 points and Bryann Guyton registered 14 points while Fantasha Tyson scored 12 points for the Lady Bears, who shot 53 percent.
 
The Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 23-17 in turnover points, 24-17 in second chance points and 29-27 in bench points. They made 6 of 14 three-point attempts for 43 percent and 20 of 27 free throw attempts for 74 percent. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Falcons 54-22 in points in the paint.

The Lady Falcons will head to Salisbury, N.C., to play Livingstone College on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
