Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – Guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) led four double-figure scorers with 14 points as Saint Augustine's University gave an outstanding effort in a 78-66 CIAA women's basketball loss to Livingstone College at New Trent Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 18, 2015.
The Lady Falcons are now 2-7 in the Southern Division and 11-13 overall. The Lady Blue Bears are 8-1 in the division and 23-1 overall.
The Lady Falcons battled the Lady Blue Bears, once ranked fifth nationally in Division II, throughout the contest. Even though the Lady Blue Bears led the entire second half, the margin stayed in single digits until late in the game.
The Lady Falcons penetrated the lane and drew fouls on the Lady Blue Bears. The visitors were 33 of 49 from the free throw line for 67 percent.
The Lady Blue Bears, harassed by the Lady Falcons' defense, turned the ball over 22 times, but the Lady Falcons shot 21 percent in the second half which prevented them from surging ahead. Overall, the Lady Falcons committed 25 turnovers and were outrebounded 53-40.
"I was impressed with our overall effort on both ends of the floor," Lady Falcons' Head Coach Rachel Bullard said. "However, the lack of boxing out on the defensive side hurt us tremendously."
Cierra York led the Lady Blue Bears with 21 points. Amber Curtis scored 16 points and Aliyah Grinage added 12 points.
McCombs scored 10 first-half points while Wilson and Dunaway added nine and eight, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who outshot and outrebounded the Lady Blue Bears in the first half. The Lady Falcons shot 40 percent and snatched 23 rebounds compared to 39 percent and 19 rebounds for the Lady Blue Bears.
The Lady Falcons also made 17 of 24 free throw attempts for 71 percent. The Lady Blue Bears made 16 of 26 free throw attempts for 62 percent.
The Lady Blue Bears opened an eight-point lead in the first half, but the Lady Falcons went on a 17-12 run in the final six minutes to go into halftime down 43-40.
Precious Roberts led the Lady Blue Bears with nine points in the first half. Grinage and York each added eight points.
The contest was designated as the Play 4Kay game to raise breast cancer awareness.
The Lady Falcons will host Fayetteville State University in their final regular game of the season on Saturday, February 21. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court inside Emery Gymnasium.
