Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Miranda Zanni (So./Phoenix, OR) earned a pitching victory, a save and smacked a home run as Saint Augustine's University defeated Bluefield State College 6-3 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park on Friday, March 13, 2014.
The Lady Falcons evened their record at 4-4 overall with the sweep. Bluefield State fell to 2-4 overall.
Zanni struck out two batters in the final two innings for the save in the first contest. Hannah Stutts (Sr./Statesville, NC) was the winning pitcher after scattering nine hits and recording five strikeouts in five innings. She allowed one earned run.
Zanni's solo homer over the centerfield fence sparked a two-run fifth inning for the Lady Falcons, who tied the score at 3-3. The Lady Falcons moved ahead 4-3 in the same inning when Korey Hill (So./Virginia Beach, VA) scored Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) on a single.
The Lady Falcons added two runs in the sixth inning for the final score. Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC) scored Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) and Daja White (Jr./Leland, NC) on a two-run double.
The Lady Falcons started the first game with a 1-0 lead when Jo'Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) scored Parker on a single. Bluefield State scored two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning for a 3-1 lead before the Lady Falcons rallied.
Parker was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored in the opening win. Both Haili Pettifer (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) and Noland were 2-for-3 with one run scored, and Pettifer hit a double. Stutts was 2-for-2 and Daja White was 1-for-1 with one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who tallied 13 hits.
In the second game, Zanni struck out five batters and allowed five hits in seven complete innings for the pitching win. She gained offensive support early as the Lady Falcons scored four runs in the first inning.
Parker scored herself and Daja White with a two-run homer for a 2-0 lead. The Lady Falcons tacked on two more runs in the inning when Jo'Landa White stole home and Pettifer scored McPhaul on a sacrifice fly. Bluefield State scored its only run in the fifth inning.
McPhaul was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Daja White was 2-for-2 with one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who totaled six hits. McPhaul also had three stolen bases and Jo'Landa White recorded two stolen bases.
The Lady Falcons will host the University of Mount Olive in a doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park on Monday, March 16. The starting times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
